The Pan Am Championships are the Continental Championships, covering North, Central and South America, and are one of the most important annual events for Canada to collect nation ranking points that will be used to determine Olympic quotas for the 2020 Tokyo Games.

“The Pan Am Championships mark a shift in our track programming as we enter the Olympic qualification phase,” said Kris Westwood, Team Manager and High Performance Director for Cycling Canada. “From now until 2020 every Pan Ams, world championships and World Cup count towards our quota in Tokyo. Having taken a hard look at our chances in each of the Olympic events, we’re taking a strategic approach to make sure we maximize our qualification chances.”

Cycling Canada has selected a team comprised of both Olympic-level and NextGen development athletes, as it builds experience for younger riders and looks to capture points in key Olympic events. In the Sprint program, Rio Olympian Hugo Barrette will be joined on the men’s side by former Junior world champion Stefan Ritter. The women’s sprint squad will consist of Amelia Walsh and Lauriane Genest, who both represented Canada at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

“We’ve entered Olympic pool athletes in the critical individual events: the Omnium, the Sprint and the Keirin,” explains Westwood. “We will be running development athletes in the Team Pursuits, which allows most of the Olympic pool athletes to skip this trip and focus on the upcoming World Cups and world championships.”

“The toughest decision was to not enter the men’s Team Sprint after determining that we are not at a level to vie for an Olympic spot in that event.  But it was a critical decision that frees up energy and resources for us to pursue qualification in the individual sprint events.”

The women’s endurance squad will be led by Olympic bronze medalist Allison Beveridge, who won two gold medals at the 2017 Pan Am Championships. The men’s endurance team is led by Aidan Caves, who has won six medals at previous Pan Am Championships, including two gold medals.

“We’re bringing a youthful team and I’m excited,” said team manager Kevin Field. “Like every year, this project is about preparing our Under-23’s for the world championships. However, even more, it’s about showcasing Canadians in the “Big Show” [the WorldTour].”

“This year, we’ll have more Canadians than ever in the race – between Team Canada, Team Rally, Israel Cycling Academy, Astana and Mitchelton-Scott we’ll have [up to] 16 Canadians in the race. Team Canada’s plan is to put on a show, get in the breakaways and ignite the crowd. We’ll have four debutants and three race veterans in the Team Canada line up, anchored by team captain Bruno [Langlois],” added Field.

Pickrell’s 4th in Scratch Race Highlights Top-10 Performances for Canada at 2018 Junior Track Worlds

Tags:

August 21, 2018 (Aigle, Switzerland) – Team Canada finished the 2018 UCI Junior Track World Championships in Aigle, Switzerland, with four top-10 performances from a young team that had only one returning athlete from last year, with two-thirds of the team being first year Juniors.

Five-time national champion Riley Pickrell of Victoria, BC, had the top performance of the project, finishing fourth in the men’s Scratch Race. Other top-10 results include:  Kaitlyn Rauwerda and Sarah Van Dam finishing seventh in the women’s Madison; seventh for the women’s Team Pursuit squad of Micaiah Besler, Ainsley Black, Kaitlyn Rauwerda, Victoria Slater and Sarah Van Dam; and Kaitlyn Rauwerda finishing tenth in the women’s Points Race.

“The Junior Worlds project was a great trip,” said Team Manager and NextGen coach Jenny Trew.  “As one would hope for a project of this nature, there was a high level of learning; especially given how young the team was. Riley’s fourth place in the Scratch Race on his 17th birthday was a standout performance, but each of the riders left their all out on the velodrome in Aigle and should be proud of their performances. The momentum in the team grew with each day of competition as they supported one another’s performances. I’m excited to be a part of this group’s introduction and progression through the high performance stream of cycling in Canada. This is just the beginning for this cohort.”

Record 12 Medals for Team Canada at UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup in Baie-Comeau

Tags:

August 21, 2018 (Baie-Comeau, QC) – Canada had a strong finish to the para-cycling road season on Sunday at the final round of the UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup in Baie-Comeau, Quebec, with four medals on the last day of competition, including two golds. Canada finishes the final round of the World Cup with a total of 12 medals, including six gold; tied with Great Britain and Germany for the most gold medals. Overall, Canadian athletes won six gold, two silver and four bronze medals over the week.

On the final day of competition, world champions Shelley Gautier of Toronto in women’s T1, and Tristen Chernove of Cranbrook, BC, in men’s C2, each won their respective road races. In men’s C1, Ross Wilson of Edmonton took the silver medal, and in women’s C4, Marie-Claude Molnar of St-Hubert, Quebec, won the bronze medal.

In the final World Cup standings, Shelley Gautier finished off an incredible road season that saw her sweep all six World Cup events – three time trials and three road races – for a perfect 360 points, in addition to her two world titles earlier in the month. Tristen Chernove finished second overall in the men’s C2 World Cup rankings, despite competing in only four of six events, while Michael Sametz of Calgary finished third in men’s C3 standings, despite racing in only half of the events; all of which he won. Holly Dapp of Fort Erie, Ontario, was second overall in women’s H2, Charles Moreau of Victoriaville, Quebec, finished second overall in men’s H3, while Nicole Clermont of St Denis de Brompton, Quebec, was third overall in women’s C5.

“It was a really, really good World Cup for us,” said Sebastien Travers, Para head coach for Cycling Canada. “Twelve medals is a new record for the Para group, and it is comprised of medals from the High Performance and the NextGen groups, which is exactly what we hoped for. The athletes that came on board for this event showed a lot of potential, and we can be assured we will see more of them in the coming years. Points-wise, we are in a good position; we have already earned a spot for the Paralympics, so things are looking good. Of course, 2019 and 2020 are still part of the qualification process, so we have to make sure we are qualifying as many spots as we can for the Games. I’m happy and proud of everyone, and it was a good event for us.”

“I learned a lot today,” said Dapp, “it was my first road race and I loved it. I’m very appreciative of the crew here, who made it a lot of fun but were professional and helpful. I’ve come a long way in the last two years, but I know I still have a long way to go.”

In other Canadian results, Myriam Adam of Saguenay, Quebec, was fourth in the women’s H3 road race, as was Kara Douville of Calgary in the women’s H4 event. The men’s H3 road race had four Canadian competitors, led by Joey Desjardins in fifth, followed by Alex Hyndman in sixth, Charles Moreau in eighth and Rico Morneau in 14th. In the men’s H2 road race, Matthew Kinnie was the top Canadian in eighth place, followed former world champion Robert Labbe in ninth and Eric Page in tenth. Patrick Desnoyers, at his first World Cup, finished sixth in the H5 men’s road race.

Quebec Singletrack Experience Stage 7 Sentiers du Moulin – Mission Accomplished

Tags:

August 13, 2018 (Sentiers du Moulin, Quebec) – Blue skies greeted us for Stage 7 at Sentiers du Moulin, located near Lac Beauport, where we had been just two days earlier. The mood among riders and volunteers as we ate breakfast, boarded the bus and got ready for the start was decidedly different than any other of the event.

Final stage is underway © QSE
There was far less tension, especially among the GC contenders as only a major blowout would be likely to change the final standings (final results can be found here). But we were all feeling more relaxed, satisfied, and excited for the last ride. All of it was tempered with fatigue, of course, and a bit of sadness: More than one rider told me they just wanted to drink it in so they could hold onto the experience just a bit longer.

 © QSE
Today, however, was not a day to relax on the trails. The course demanded full attention through the full 19km, and delivered maximum reward for our efforts. Three of the top 10 trails in Quebec can be found at Sentiers du Moulin and we rode two of them, the rambling Raph climb and Super G, a fun, fast descent, complete with big banked turns, drops and a wooden roller perched on top of a small cabin. The third, Léon, is a more aggressive enduro line, one of several to be found at SdM.

My game plan, as it had been all week, was not to push. I learned quickly that I didn’t have the legs to go hard, but I knew if I rode smart, I’d make it to the finish. Given that I’d only registered for this event about three weeks before it started, I was not surprised by my overall performance, but it does make me wonder what I could achieve with some, or even a lot of training. For today and for this race, however, I’m happy to have competed each stage and to have done so with only one minor crash and two dropped chains.

As you might expect, there was a great deal of celebration at the finish, where each rider received a loud welcome and a medal to officially become a Qué-biker. For one female rider, Sophie, competing for the first time, the race was especially sweet, as her boyfriend greeted her at the line with an engagement ring on bended knee. She said yes!

Happy Qué-bikers... © QSE
The day ended with awards (I picked up my trophy for the women’s 50-59 category and will proudly display it in my home!), dinner, a video recap of each stage and then dancing. Watching many of the athletes exchanging contact info and saying goodbyes, I have little doubt the experiences and friendships gained this week will remain for a lifetime for many of us. The organizers and volunteers have done a stellar job putting together a stage race that is much more than race; it truly is an experience.

West Carleton Gravel Series Kick Off Report, Results, PHOTOS

Tags:

August 10, 2018 (Carleton, ON) – The first event of the inaugural West Carleton Gravel Series was held on August 5 and despite the heat warning which caused some to wish they had brought three waterbottles it was a huge success. Drawing rave reviews from the participants for its scenic course and for being well organized it left everyone asking, “When is the next one?” Answer: Sept 8th & 9th.

Winner of the race Osmond Bakker © Robert Roaldi
Twenty-two participants (including 4 women) set off at 9am to tackle 87km of the best gravel West Carleton has to offer. For awhile it stayed together but as the kilometers went by there was a gradual race of attrition. Marc Boudreau (The Cyclery) was the most animated launching the first attack and being a constant presence at the front keeping the average speed at 40km/hr for the first half of the race.

Charlie Gorman © Robert Roaldi
The most decisive moment as expected happened on the Needhams Side Road unmaintained climb. Charlie Gorman (nine2fivepro) unaware of the climb’s difficulties attacked leading into the ascent but was quickly passed by Boudreau, Osmond Bakker (nine2fivepro) and Steve “White Panther” Proulx. At the top Proulx was leading as he tackled the flat unmaintained section skillfully while Boudreau and Bakker were hanging on.

Steve Proulx (f) and Osmond Bakker © Robert Roaldi
With the rest dropped the three leaders shared the pace over the last 15km ensuring Gorman couldn’t bridge up. At the end Bakker took the sprint from Boudreau with Proulx coming in for third. Even with the heat and a challenging gravel course the average speed for the leaders was 37km/hr over the 87km.

In the women’s event all the women decided to ride together until the very end when Layla Prieur (Euro Sports) edged ahead to take the win. Along with Mike Bennett (Euro Sports) the last five riders had fun riding in a group and enjoyed riding on the well maintained gravel roads of West Carleton.

Overall the day was a resounding success. Originally the West Carleton Gravel Series was going to be just two events in September but when a race near Toronto was cancelled we decided to add another event on Aug 5 – despite it being the long weekend. Turns out it was a great prelude to our upcoming September Double Header. For now we’re just extremely pleased with how the first West Carleton Gravel Series went and with the feedback we received. That’s exactly why we do it! Hope to see you in September!

Quebec Singletrack Experience Stage 4 Lac Delage – The Story of Poutine

Tags:

August 08, 2018 (Lac Delage, Quebec) – Just one valley east from Valcartier lies the small town of Lac Delage, which rings a lake of the same name. And while they may favour skis and rifles in Valcartier, it’s all about the fat tires at E47 Lac Delage – the “E” being short for Empire.

Sweet trails © QSE
This relatively new 21km trail network was promised as a “recovery day” from yesterday’s long stage at Mont Sainte-Anne. Owing to a huge downpour the night before and rain that fell steadily for the first hour of the stage, there wasn’t a whole lot of recovery on the mud-soaked trails, but it was a whole lot of fun just the same.

What goes up… © QSE
Québec is synonymous with two things: maple syrup and poutine. For that past 10 years I’ve been a more exposed “Quebecker” and can better appreciate some of the nuances of these two iconic foods. I make my own syrup and have pretty high standards when it comes to the fries, gravy and cheese curds involved in a good poutine. Simon, one of the true Quebeckers in the race (not an Anglo-transplant like myself), provided some background on the creation of this most perfect of after-ride-snacks.

Battle wounds © QSE
The story goes that cheese curds – which can only be properly made in Québec, in case you were wondering – were a bit of an accident of a cheesemaker who decided to see if he could sell them rather than garbage them. Then, another happy accident occurred in Drummondville, when someone (no detail on whom) inadvertently dropped some cheese curds onto his plate of fries and gravy. He tasted it, liked it, and a culinary legend was born.

Trails, trails, trails © QSE
Both the syrup, in the form of maple fudge and poutine made an appearance at today’s stage, along with a lot of other surprises, such as a Dorito-throwing King Kong, the fog-shrouded wreckage of an old plane and yes, even vodka shots at the second aid station. As I’ve learned, sometimes it’s these random, unexpected things that can become all the motivation you need to get through the next climb or to help you push to the finish.

Plane wreckage © QSE
Until today, I had never been a big fan of riding in the wet, but this has more to do with my disdain for cleaning my bike afterwards than the trail conditions themselves. Today, however, I forgot about the dreaded bike cleaning at the end and really enjoyed the riding. Each stage of the QSE has a timed climb and timed descent and classifications for both.

Leader says thumbs up © QSE
The designated segments for both of these at E47 were incredible – the descent down Kamasutrail was a superb combination of technical features and flow and included a narrow pass through a rock canyon, barely wide enough for 800mm bars. The climb, La montée de lait, was also varied, with switchbacks, small bridges and some rock problems, all made more challenging by the water and mud.

Finishline congrats © QSE
At only 20km in length, this was one of the shorter stages, and the final 3km circled Lac Delage itself, on a combination of paved and gravel roads and bike path. I was expecting to struggle today, given the length of yesterday’s stage, but I felt strong all day and having poutine waiting at the finish line was a fitting reward for this “Quebecker’s” efforts.

Canada’s Michael Woods (EF Education First-Drapac p/b Cannondale) had a strong day finishing 6th and moved up to 8th overall. Kuss covered the 88.6-mile course in 3 hours and 25 minutes. Crossing the line 29 seconds later was his teammate Neilson Powless (USA), who won the sprint for second place ahead of Rally Cycling’s Kyle Murphy (USA).

Kuss attacked and passed the dwindling peloton on the steep, lower slopes of Mount Nebo, the highest mountain in the Wasatch Range of Utah. He was alone at the top, 9,300 feet above sea level at the Utah Office of Tourism King of the Mountain climb and held off a hard-charging chase group on the exhilarating 23-mile descent to the finish.

“At the beginning of the climb, I felt really strong. Pete Stetina (Trek-Segafredo) made a little surge, maybe three or four k (kilometers) into the climb. I followed that, and still felt pretty good and the gap kept going. I just kept going at a reasonable speed. It was not the most pleasant experience out there in the headwind, but (I was) happy to make it to the finish line,” explained Kuss, who had a one-minute lead on the chasing group of elite riders as he crested Mount Nebo.

Making its seventh appearance at the Tour of Utah, the legendary Mount Nebo stage brought major changes to the 2018 overall leaderboard. The victory gives Kuss a 21-second General Classification (G.C.) lead over Powless. Tejay van Garderen (USA) of BMC Racing Team dropped from first to third, 25 seconds down. Murphy surged from 27th to fourth overall on G.C. Joe Dombrowski (USA) jumped up five spots to fifth overall, 38 seconds behind Kuss.

After a fast and furious start on Stage 2, Travis McCabe (USA) of UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Team claimed the first intermediate sprint in front of historic Peteetneet Museum in Payson, and retained the Utah Sports Commission Sprint jersey. Griffin Easter (USA) of 303 Project, the last rider from the six-man breakaway to bereeled in after 40 miles in the saddle, was awarded the Larry H. Miller Dealerships Most Aggressive Rider jersey. Gage Hecht (USA) of Aevolo Pro Cycling was voted America First Credit Union Fan Favorite, in the category of Most Promising Rookie. The Utah Office of Tourism King of the Mountain jersey stayed with Daan Olivier (NED) of Team LottoNL-Jumbo and Powless is back in the WCF Insurance Best Young Rider jersey.

“Sepp is definitely the strongest guy in the race right now, that’s insane,” said Powless. “I was incredibly happy, at a loss for words. You don’t get to celebrate when you finish second very often, but when your teammate finishes first and you come in across the line next, that’s about as special as it gets.”

Stage 3 presented by America First Credit Union on Thursday, Aug. 9 is the longest stage of the week at 116.4 miles (188 km). A new start on the far end of Antelope Island State Park takes place at the Garr Ranch. It is the third time the Tour has started on the island. After a wind-swept seven miles over the causeway to cross the Great Salt Lake’s Farmington Bay to the mainland, the race will serpentine through Davis County to the new finish in Layton City. There are three Sprint lines in Davis County, once in Syracuse and twice in Farmington. One short, steep KOM up the Bountiful Bench could be the launching pad for a late breakaway. On the return stretch from Bountiful, the race will pass through Hill Air Force Base for a second year. After five circuits through Layton Commons Park, a stage winner will be crowned on North Wasatch Drive across from the park.

The Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah is free to all spectators, making professional cycling one of the most unique professional sports in the world today. The Tour of Utah remains a 2.HC-rated stage race on the UCI America Tour, making it one of the premier events for professional cycling teams in North America. It is also one of the prominent road cycling events that is also part of USA Cycling’s Pro Road Tour.

Silber Pro Cycling Team Seeking New Title Sponsor for 2019

Tags:

August 08, 2018 – Arthur Silber recently informed members of Silber Pro Cycling’s management that he would cease sponsoring the team at the end of 2018. My first reaction–and it was overwhelming–was to thank him for his magnificent generosity. For those who don’t know, in 2012 Arthur sponsored our club team, Medique p/b Silber Investments. In 2014 that team took out a Continental license from the UCI and Arthur became the title sponsor of what has since been called Silber Pro Cycling. He has been the title sponsor of the team for the last 5 years.

I wanted to thank Arthur personally because he’s a good friend and I want people to understand the broader impact of his generosity. After the demise of Spidertech in 2012, Canada sent only one rider to the U23 World Championships over the following two years. In 2015 Canada qualified to send 4 U23 riders to Worlds, 3 of those selected were from Silber and all 4 now race for Professional Continental teams. Silber Pro Cycling was largely responsible for getting the UCI points at major races to qualify more riders for Worlds.

Here’s another way to say the same thing: Arthur’s sponsorship enabled our team to become the focal point of the country’s development program that begins at the club level with provincial cycling bodies and is overseen by Cycling Canada. Our riders–mostly U23–represented Canada at the World Championships 18 times from 2014-2017. Silber riders have also provided Team Canada with KOM jerseys and animated the World Tour races in Montreal and Quebec each year. The point is that Arthur’s generosity should be understood beyond being the title sponsor of one of Canada’s most successful teams ever. Don’t think of this as simply a Canadian thing: through Silber’s success and the documentation of the daily lives of our riders, the team has raised the visibility of the adventure we call cycling across North America. We are poised to extend our impact.

We’re actively looking for a new title sponsor as we compete at the Tour of Utah before heading to the Colorado Classic. New and loyal support for the team is in place. We recently came to new agreements with a major industry partner and a university research program which are contingent on us being able to field the team in 2019. And we’re excited about the direction of rebranding that is ongoing with potential title and presenting sponsors.

Today we raced stage 1 of the Tour of Utah and I was thinking of recent conversations I have had with people working at the highest level of the sport and industry. In 2016 Silber’s Kris Dahl won Stage 1 on the same finishing circuits in Cedar City. This year, the peloton was climbing 15% grades as it battled for 15 miles through Parowan Canyon toward the ski resort town of Brian Head. It was boiling hot in the thin air and some of our riders were really suffering as they worked their way through thin-treed forests scarred by past fires and pests. Cycling is such an adventure, and it’s what we do.

On behalf of Gord Fraser and all the riders and staff who have worked with a team that wore his name over our hearts, I want to thank Arthur for sharing his love of cycling. He has commitment to the sport with our entire management team, including Michael Wolfe of Mandevco Properties and Harold Stotland of Hamelin Industries. But most of all, I want to thank Arthur for sharing incredible cycling adventures for his many, many friends, and his passion for the sport with the country by giving bike racing a focal point: Silber Pro Cycling. The task now is for others to come forward and leave their marks on the sport.
