Canada’s Batty Wins Bronze at 2018 MTB Worlds as Courtney and Schurter Triumph – Smith 6th

Tags:

September 09, 2018 (Lenzerheide, SUI) – Canada’s Emily Batty took home the bronze medal in the Elite women’s cross-country at the 2018 MTB World Championships on Saturday in Lenzerheide, Switzerland. Fellow Canuck, Haley Smith, raced to a stellar 6th-place finish putting two Canucks in the top ten as American Kate Courtney took the win in her first year as an Elite rider.

In the Elite men’s race Leandre Bouchard was the top Canadian in 26th place as Switzerland’s Nino Schurter won his 4th rainbow jersey in front of a mssive home crowd. It was a record 7th title for the Swiss star.

Women’s Race

The women’s 29.4 km race featured a Start loop + 6 laps and began with an attack by 2016 world champion Annika Langvad of Denmark, who opened a gap on Courtney and Batty. However, Courtney dropped Batty on the fourth lap and then caught Langvad on the final lap. The American was on fire and won her first Elite title by 47 seconds. Batty hung on for third behind a fast-closing Jolanda Neff of Switzerland.

“I’m so proud,” said Batty. “When I was racing, I knew that there was no way I was going to walk away without a medal. I found my limit; I’ve never gone as hard as today. That was my goal: to turn myself inside out, and leave it all out there. We [Batty and Courtney] did get a good gap from behind early in the race, and I just tried to hold that. I feel like I’m just starting to grow into my potential.”

Smith had the ride of her life moving up into 12th by the third lap and was tenth a lap later. By Lap 5 she was into sixth, and on the seventh and final lap moved past Maja Wloszczowska of Poland into fifth, before crashing and losing a spot. Her career-best 6th eclipsed her recent best-ever 8th at the Mont-Sainte-Anne MTB World Cup.

“It was definitely a great day – bordering on perfect. I was happy when I crossed the line, and definitely satisfied. You never know how your legs are going to be until the race is underway, and so much can happen in a race that getting to the finish line with a successful performance is a really fulfilling feeling,” shared Smith.

“I actually had moved into 5th on the penultimate lap and had a small gap behind me until I crashed and moved back into sixth. But I wasn’t really focused on a specific position – I was more thinking about continuing to charge forward and see how far up the field I could climb. The course was in great shape. My goal coming into Worlds was to have a performance that I could be proud of. I didn’t know what that was going to look like in terms of placing, but I suppose I realistically thought that a top 15 would be a very good day,” she added.

Catharine Pendrel, starting back on the fourth row, had a strong start and was in the top ten by the second lap. She was joined by Smith on Lap 4, who passed her, but Pendrel was still in good shape for a top ten until a lap and a half to go, when she suffered a flat tire. Pendrel is still coming back from a mid-season broken arm.

Catherine Pendrel © Armin M. Kuestenbrueck
“I was happy with my race and how I was able to move up to 8th from a 4th row start. I had just passed Gunn Rita when I noticed my tire had lost air. I was not far from the tech zone luckily and had a pretty quick change to get back in, but I lost my forward Rhythm and as a result several more positions,” Pendrel told Pedal. “The course was great. It was in perfect condition today and really engaging. Haley was amazing! We got to ride together for a couple laps and she was riding so well. Definitely a sign of more top results to come.”

In other Canadian results, Sandra Walter finished 21st, after riding in the top-20 for most of the race, Cindy Montambault was 31st, Elyse Nieuwold was 38th, and Catherine Fleury was 42nd.

Dan Proulx, National Mountain Bike Coach, said, “I’m very pleased with the Team’s performances this week. Our goal is to create an environment where champions are inevitable and each year we’re moving closer to that. Without a doubt the ride of the week was Emily’s Bronze medal. Her ride capped an amazing season – her best so far. I know she’ll be hungrier than ever to win this one next year.”

“Haley Smith deserves a huge congrats on her sixth place ride. Two years ago, her best finish in Elite was 42nd. She’s come through the ranks quickly and consistently – starting 2018 with a Bronze at Commonwealth Games. Her work ethic and determination are incredible and I’m confident that this is just a stepping stone to future success.”

Men’s Race

Schurter was the clear favourite in the Elite Men’s 33.6 km race that included a Start loop + 7 laps. Living only 20 min away from Lenzerheide and with the massive home crowd behind him he attacked on the opening lap. Only Gerhard Kerschbaumer (Italy) could match his pace as the two battled for the entire race.

Behind Mathieu van der Poel of the Netherlands looked like he might join the leaders after he recovered from a slow start but the leaders were wary and the Dutchman, who dropped the other chasers as he tried to bridge, ended up settling for third.

Near the end of the penultimate lap Schurter attacked and gapped his rival by 6s and never looked back. Kerschbaumer could not respond, and the fans erupted as Schurter rolled across the finish line with an 11-second margin to the cheers of thousands of Swiss fans.

“This is a special win with so many people cheering which helped push me as the Team Relay was still affecting me a bit. I was planning to attack near the end and then it looked like Kerschbaumer was struggling so the timing seemed right. it. It was a great feeling to hear the cheering at the finish line,” said Schurter.

Bouchard was happy with his result. “My goal was for a top 30 so it’s great to achieve it. I really happy to finish the season with my best peroformance of the year. I got some ups and downs this year so to prove myself that I was capable of that kind of performance is pretty sweet,” he told Pedal.

Leandre Bouchard © Armin M. Kuestenbrueck
“The course and up being realy dry so we got grip and speed. It still was a really bumpy track. I was super smooth technicaly. When riding in a pack, I stayed calm and really see my line energy saver compare to other stiff rider. Keeping the momentum was important. My mountain bike season is over now. I go back home and enjoy the fall with cycling/outdoor/running activities. I also have my last intership in teaching physical education so that will keep me busy and I’m exited for this different challenge. That was sweet to be with the national team (as ususaly with my pro team), the vibe, staff and athletes are amazing.”

Rochester Cyclocross Day 1 Report, Results, Photos – Canada’s Rochette Wins

Tags:

September 08, 2018 ( Rochester, N.Y.) – The first Category 1 events for the 2018 USA Cycling Professional Cyclocross Calendar (ProCX) season returned to Rochester, N.Y. for Rochester Cyclocross, now in its 11th season. After steamy summer conditions last week in Roanoke, Virg., cooler temperates in the 60s were refreshing, much like the reworked 3.2-kilometer course at Genesee Valley Park.

Maghalie Rochette © Bruce Buckley
Taking control of most of the Elite Women’s C1 race from the second lap, Maghalie Rochette (St-Jerome, Quebec/CXFever p/b Specialized) was all alone in the finishing stretch to win her first ProCX event of the season. The Elite Men’s C1 contest was controlled in the final laps by two-time U.S. Cyclocross National Champion Stephen Hyde (Easthampton, Mass./Cannondale p/b CyclocrossWorld), winning the C1 race for a second year in a row.

Women’s Elite C1 Race
Emerging from a cloud of dust in the field of 35 women at the start was Ellen Noble (Kennebunkport, Maine/Trek Factory Racing). Rochette was close on her back wheel, taking the lead on lap two.

“Everything went right and nothing went wrong,” said Rochette, who reversed last year’s C1 finish when she was second to Noble. Rochette won in a time of 46 minutes, 50 seconds, a solid 21 seconds in front of Noble. “I’m super happy. I did feel really strong in training, but you never know coming into the first race how that’s going to compare with the other girls. So I felt confident with the work that I did. I really didn’t know what would happen. I just went out, did my thing, and it worked out.”

In the mix were Kaitie Keough (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cannondale p/b CyclocrossWorld), Ruby West (Hamilton, Ont./Specialized – Tenspeed Hero), and Crystal Anthony (Newbury Park, Calif/LIV Cycling). It was a seesaw battle between Rochette and Noble until Rochette attacked with two laps to go and stayed strong to the finish.

“On the first lap, Ellen and I got a gap pretty quickly,” recapped Rochette about the women’s race and her C1 win. “Then we worked together, we had like a 15-second gap. She said ‘want to work together?’ And I said ‘yeah, sure.’ So we worked together for a few laps. Then she attacked me, and I brought her back. Then on the fourth lap, I just went without really thinking about it. My thought was, oh, all right I’m attacking her so let’s make it count. The gap grew, so I just kept focusing on what I was doing, and not on her really. It worked out.”

With four laps to go, Anthony moved into third place, with all chasers beginning to lose touch, including Keough, Caroline Mani (Besacon, France/Van Dessel Factory Team), and Erica Zaveta (Brevard, N.C./ Garneau-Easton Cycling). Anthony, who had two podiums at last week’s Deschutes GO Cross, would push across the line six seconds ahead of Mani to secure the third podium spot on Saturday.

“I’m happy with it,” Noble said about second place in the first C1 race of the season. “Obviously, I always want to come to these races and win. But I feel like I put together the best race that I could. I made a couple of really, really, really small mistakes that allowed Maghalie to get away. On a course like this, it’s really just about not making mistakes.”

Men’s Elite C1 Race
The 37 riders in the field Elite Men’s field battled each other as much as the clouds of dust and some wind in the last race of the day. On the first of nine laps, Hyde grabbed the early lead heading into the Double Trouble technical area along the New York State Barge Canal. He was followed by Kerry Werner (Birdsboro, Penn./Kona Maxxis Shimano), Gage Hecht (Parker, Colo./Alpha Bicycle Co./Groove Subaru) and Lance Haidet (San Luis Obispo, Calif./Donnelly Sports). The foursome set the pace for the first four laps.

“My legs felt good and I kept looking at the lap counter. I was thinking maybe I don’t want to do this for five laps, maybe one of them would ride back up to me,” Hyde said about breaking free from the lead group about halfway through the race. “They kindof started coming back up. I hit it again and just kept the pressure going. They weren’t able to ride up to me. I was just super consistent. It worked. It was a good testament to fitness.”

Men’s podium © Bruce Buckley
With five to go, a chase group of three riders was working together – Tobin Ortenblad (Santa Cruz, Calif./Santa Cruz/Donkey Label Racing), Jack Kisseberth (Westhampton, Mass./Garneau Easton p/b Transitions) and Jeremy Powers (Southampton, Mass./Aspire Racing). The threesome had closed the gap to the four leaders to just five seconds.

Hyde attacked several times on the final two laps, keeping Werner in second place and all the chasers at bay. He would hop the Full Moon Vista barriers on the final lap, while Werner dismounted. This gap proved to be the different as Hyde held on to win in a time of 1 hour, 2 minutes, 53 seconds, with Werner 18 seconds back.

With two laps to go in the chase group, Ortenblad caught and passed Hecht. Kisseberth was closing to Hecht next from the fifth spot. It would be Ortenblad battling Kisseberth to the line to finish third, just four seconds behind Werner.

“Third is OK, I’ll take it. It’s my best result in Rochester. So it’s a good step forward,” said Ortenblad. “I think the legs were there and my head was turned on. Everything lined up today, which is good.

“It was faster from the get-go than I think we all had imagined,” Ortenblad added. “There was a group of four, then Powers and I were chasing, Powers was doing the work. Then we were holding even, but maybe I picked up the tempo a little bit, and then Jeremy was gone. I just tried to ride forward most of the day, pick guys off one at a time. I was able to do that for sure, but I like to think that maybe if I was in that front group I could have made a move, gone with Hyde.”

Hecht would finish fifth, Haidet was sixth and Powers was seventh

Canada’s Sean Fincham 14th in U23 Men’s Race at 2018 MTB World Championships – Unterberger 20th

Tags:

September 07, 2018 (Lenzerheide, Switzerland) – Sean Fincham of Squamish, BC, was Canada’s top rider on day 3 of the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships, currently taking place in Lenzerheide, Switzerland. Fincham finished 14th in the Under-23 men’s competition. In the Under-23 women’s competition, Emily Unterberger of Revelstoke, BC, finished 20th and Laurie Arseneault of Terrebonne, Quebec, was 21st.

The women’s race was dominated by the Swiss, who finished 1-2. Unterberger moved up steadily through the race, from the mid-30s in the first lap, to the high 20s and then into 20th place with one lap to go. Arseneault, the Canadian national champion, had a stronger start, but faded slightly in the final laps. Other Canadian results include Mackenzie Myatt in 27th and Juliette Tetreault in 42nd.

The men’s race was won by last year’s silver medalist, Alan Hatherly of South Africa. Fincham, the Canadian men’s Under-23 champion, started on the fifth row, but had made his way to the mid-20s by the end of the first lap. His second lap was the fastest of the entire field, moving him into 16th, and a lap later he was up to 11th. However, the effort took a toll, and he faded slightly in the second half of the race.

Fincham, who was a member of the Team Relay squad that finished eight on Wednesday, said “It’s been a pretty awesome Worlds, I’m stoked. The start is always hectic, but I managed to sneak by a few people before the singletrack, and I hit there to move up. I was in there fighting for the top ten, but fell apart a little bit at the end. It’s been an eye-opening year … I know it’s possible now, and I’m looking forward to next year.”

Canada Solid 8th in Team Relay at 2018 MTB World Championships – Switzerland Wins

Tags:

September 05, 2018 (Lenzerheide, Switzerland) – Team Canada delivered a solid start rallying to an 8th-place finish as 21km Team Relay kicked off the 2018 Mountain Bike World Championships in Lenzerheide, Switzerland. The new 5-rider format with U23 women is in its second year.

The Canadian squad of Sean Fincham (UM), Carter Woods (Jr), Laurie Arseneault (UW), Haley Smith (EW) and Peter Disera (EM) was as high as 4th courtesy of a strong leg by Woods on the second lap. Italy’s Gerhard Kerschbaumer gave his team an early lead but France took over and then Australia opened a gap on the third lap.

Germany and Switzerland were behind battling to reel in Australia and on the final lap Nino Schurter (SUI) was able to take the lead. Canada lost some ground and hit the final lap with anchor, Peter Disera, in 10th. He went to work and was able to bring home the red maple leaf to a solid 8th-place finish.

“I was a lot happier this year being the anchor,” said Disera in a team release, “instead of riding first like last year. Honestly, I believe with the team we had, that we could have gone top-5, but everybody rode great. I’m guessing Carter’s lap time was close to mine, because he was flying. I tried to do what I could at the end, but the gaps were just a little too big. I reeled in a few riders, and it was good prep for the cross-country on Saturday.”

“Proud of our Relay at Worlds tonight. 8th in the new 5-rider format. Two positions better than last year and some excellent lap times! Sean Fincham, Carter Woods, @LaurieArseneau1 @hale_smith @Petey__D #theworkoutyouneeded @CyclingCanada,” tweeted Dan Proulx, Head MTB Coach at Cycling Canada.

August 30, 2018 (Lenzerheide, Switzerland) – Cycling Canada has announced the team of 44 riders who will represent Canada at the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in the XCO (cross-country) and Downhill events. The Championships will be held in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, on September 5-9.  This is the first world championships within the qualifying period for the 2020 Olympics, so the stakes go beyond racing for the medals, as nations begin to collect valuable ranking points for athlete quotas.

“We’re really excited about this year’s team,” said Dan Proulx, Mountain Bike Head Coach at Cycling Canada. “It’s a nice mix of rookies and experienced riders. We have a good team dynamic in this group already, which will certainly help us create an environment that is conducive to personal best performances. We hope to build off the momentum we had at last year’s World Championships in Australia.”

In the women’s Team Sprint, Amelia Walsh, from Ayr, ON and Lauriane Genest, from Levis, QC finished with a time of 33.515 seconds in the two-lap race, to beat Cuba for the bronze medal. “It’s really good,” said Genest, “At Commonwealth Games we had a good ride but we were disqualified. So getting a good ride in this morning [in qualifying] was really important. Then to be on the podium, I’m really happy about that and it’s great for my confidence. We’re already faster than at Commonwealths so this is a great sign that we’re progressing well.” This is Walsh and Genest’s first medal and Team Canada’s first medal of these championships.

In other competition, both the Canadian women’s and men’s Team Pursuit squads qualified for Thursday’s bronze medal final by finishing third and fourth, respectively, in their opening heats.  In the women’s Scratch Race, Devaney Collier of Edmonton, Alberta, finished fourth, despite crashing in the final sprint.

Peloton Contracting Summer Track Race Report and Results

Tags:

August 30, 2018 (Milton, ON) – For the first time the National Cycling Institute Milton hosted a summer track event and attendance was phenomenal with just under 70 youth and adult racers taking to the rail. Racers came from as far away as North Bay and Buffalo New York to kick of the Ontario Track season.

The Canadian National team was out in force with World Champion Maggie Coles-Lister and the Cyclery Racing’s Devaney Collier leading the charge. On the men’s side two time Winter Olympian and current National Team Pursuiter Vincent de Haitre battled with veteran Ed Veal for supremacy with hoard of young guns hot on their heals.

In the youth races it was a battle between Milton Revolution CC’s Simon Hunter and Mayer Mijhawan from Midweek who split the night at two wins a piece.

Executive Director Chris Reid commented, “Thanks to Peloton Contracting we were able to do something a little different with this event. We didn’t know what the turn out would be like but there had seemed to be interest in hosting a summer event and they allowed us to take the chance, a chance that was rewarded by a fantastic turn out. Having the youth and adults racing on the same night meant that we were able to give some great racing opportunities for the range of young riders that came out- it was cool to see young riders competitive in every category.”

The NCIM would like to give a huge thank you to both Peloton Contracting and the Town of Milton for making this event possible!!

Boilard and Zukowsky Win The Appalachian Classic – Top Honours Plus All of the Maple Syrup

Tags:

August 29, 2018 (Victoriaville, QC) – The second attempt was the charm for Montreal’s Nicolas Zukowsky (Silber). After going well close to winning honours in 2017, the Silber Pro Cycling team rider triumphed on Saturday at the summit of Mont Arthabaska, the finishing point of this 137 kilometers race played out at a breakneck pace – he cracked the 137.8 km in a little over 3 hours 30 minutes. Simone Boilard (Desjardins-Ford), riding in the Junior class, swept the honours among women, dominating the peloton in the elite pack.

Zukowsky’s Revenge
The young rider of just 20 years, hailing originally from the Laurentians, once more found himself in a winning breakaway in the company of his teammate Émile Jean, as well as valiant veteran Bruno Langlois (Vélo Cartel) and French rider Alexander Latil (Apogée-Véloselect). “I felt a lot better than last year and I still attacked at the foot of the last climb on the gravel. I fought to the head and lead to the finish. The team worked really well today. We kept attacking continuously until we got the job done,” proclaimed a cheerful but exhausted Zukowsky.

A visibly disappointed Bruno Langlois was second. “I couldn’t cover all the attacks of the guys from Silber. Adam Roberge was all alone in the middle of the race. Eventually we brought him back, but when Nicolas counter-attacked, I couldn’t go with it,” said the 39-year-old cyclist who, like Zukowsky, is set to participate in both upcoming Montreal and Quebec Grand Prix events.

For his part, Frenchman Alexander Latil finished third at the end of this ferocious fight. “Nicolas has somewhat distanced me with his last attack. He’s a very good rider so he continued to go ahead on the flat. With Bruno right behind me at the foot of the Mont Arthabaska, I was empty. I’m happy with my third place,” said Latil.

Junior Women Take it to the Seniors
Simone Boilard, the young Quebec prodigy, did justice to her reputation by really taking it to the competition in all categories. “It was a pretty simple race. I attacked from the first long sector of gravel. Magdeleine came back at me with two men Masters riders. We rode together until Mont Arthabaska and I managed to free myself at the 750 metre mark to take the line. We love maple syrup at home. Sherbrooke native Magdeleine Vallières-Mill (Québecor-Stingray), also a Junior, was satisfied with her first participation. “It really played out on the final climb and I just couldn’t follow Simone. Finishing second in front of all these senior riders, it’s always a big achievement.”

British Colombia’s Sara Bergen (Rally Cycling) completed the podium. “This course was perfect for me. I am very happy to get on the podium,” said Bergen, “thanks to the organization, it’s a unique event!”

Record Participation
The number of participants in the Appalachian Classic continues to grow each year. More than 750 people took part in one of the three races and four Gran Fondo proposed by the Organization this year. “We have 150 people more than in 2017, which is very encouraging,” said co-founder and president of the Appalachian Classic, Alexis Pinard.

The team and all our partners are working hard to reach out to people, from elite riders to occasional cyclists, who come and explore the wonderful landscapes of the Victoriaville region as well as the many regional products featured on our Gourmet Discovery courses. Obviously, we continue to learn as an organization, but the comments of participants are very positive and the event continues to gain momentum… we have lots of great new ideas and are already looking forward to next year!”

New Para-cycling Champions
The Appalachian Classic was also host to the Quebec Para-cycling Championships. Many Quebec athletes were returning from the recent round of the World Cup of Para-cycling in Baie-Comeau, among them, Victoriaville native Karl Moreau. In addition to taking the title in his category, Moreau received $5 for every Gran Fondo entrant in the Appalachian Classic, to help finance his competitive season. “This assistance makes a huge difference, especially towards purchasing a three-spoke wheel and giving me more opportunities to go to training camp. I want to say a huge thank you to the Classic for all their support for two years now.”

Nora Young (1917 – 2016) was a leading early era athlete who rose to prominence as one of the top female road cyclists in Canada in the 1930s and 1940s. She is one of Canada’s most important early female cycling pioneers, distinguishing herself in the top-level cycling races open to women in that era. Young’s cycling career never fully came to a halt, and she continued to win multiple medals in her 60s, 70s, and 80s in Master’s competitions throughout the world.
