Quebec Singletrack Experience Stage 2 Vallée Bras-du-Nord – The Beauty of Hill Repeats

Tags:

August 06, 2018 (Vallée Bras-du-Nord, QC) – I’m completely new to stage racing and the first thing I’ve learned is that I have a lot to learn. The good news is that there are several veteran racers here with plenty of friendly advice. The QSE is also a small enough group that even after only two days, it’s beginning to feel like a family. Of course there are a few rivalries on the go within the age categories and the overall leader, but even these appear to be tempered with fun.

Leader is all smiles © QSE
Lucky me to be the only female in my age category as it means that coveted “Leader” plate will remain on my bike for the entire seven days. A gal could get used to being first, though I’d rather have some competition in my category (50-59 ladies where are you? Drop everything and register for next year.) Which brings me to lesson two: I am not nearly as fit as I’d like to think I am. Two words: hill repeats. Enough said.

Riders up… © QSE
Today’s stage gave me plenty of hill repeats to practice on. Unlike yesterday, where rocks. roots and more rocks were the name of the game, the Saint-Raymond sector of Vallée Bras du Nord offered up some incredible flow, both up and down. A few stretches rolled alongside the bean fields of local farms, but most was contained within some stunning pine forests that afforded open views of the trail ahead, and – more importantly today – a bit of respite from the sun and high humidity that had temperatures soaring to near 40C with the humidex.

Sweet singletrack © QSE
It’s truly hard to choose a highlight of the day. Despite my increasingly evident lack of pre-race training, I found the climbs enjoyable, but of course it was the fast, bermy descents, punctuated with tabletops and small jumps that put the grin on my face.

Bridge over troubled water © QSE
Yet, there was one standout – a completely new trail, La Montée de Julien, that opened this very morning just for the QSE. At 4+km in length, it was part climb, part descent and a total rip the entire way, and not just because I was one of the first to ride it. True, it was mushy under the tires, as most new trails are, and that in itself was a lot of fun, but once it firms up and opens officially, it will be a stellar addition to the existing Saint-Raymond network.

Such new trails are part of the legacy left by QSE. A not-for-profit, the organization has designated a portion of its annual income generated through sponsorships and registration fees towards the creation of new trails in the Québec area.

The grind © QSE
Each year, the local networks can apply for one of five grants that are up for grabs. La Montée de Julien, along with a new bridge, will add to the experience for local and visiting riders at Saint-Raymond, making the region an even greater mecca than it already is.

Chernove Wins Canada’s 4th Gold and 7th Medal Overall at UCI Para-cycling Road Worlds

Tags:

August 06, 2018 (Maniago, Italy) – Tristen Chernove of Cranbrook, BC, successfully defended his men’s C2 road race world title on Sunday, the final day of competition at the UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships in Maniago, Italy. Chernove’s medal was Canada’s fourth gold medal and seventh overall for the Championships, with two silvers and one bronze adding to the total. Canada finished the world championships ranked fifth overall by world titles.

Chernove, who had won a silver medal in the time trial two days earlier, beat 12 other riders in a field sprint at the end of the 68 kilometre race. Alejandro Perea Arango of Colombia won the silver medal and Darren Hicks of Australia the bronze.

“I had a ton of confidence coming in here,” said Chernove. “Although I spent a lot of time on the front, I felt like I was in control. I just wanted to stay safe, pick my line and stay out of hazard’s way. I was surging and keeping control of the pace and making the others hurt. Then it got tactical when I needed to recover for my sprint.”

“I knew I’d be sprinting from a slower speed, so I wanted to be first wheel on the final corner on the cobbles. I pretty much rode to my plan and it came out great. I came to the Worlds really wanting to win the road race. I was willing to do anything to win and was super happy the way it turned out.”

In other Canadian results, Marie-Claude Molnar of St Hubert, Quebec, finished seventh and Keely Shaw of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, was eighth in the women’s C4 category, while Nicole Clermont of St Denis de Brompton, Quebec, was tenth in women’s C5. In men’s C1, Ross Wilson of Edmonton was 14th and Michael Sametz of Calgary was 14th in the men’s C3. Canada’s lone entry in the men’s Tandem, Daniel Chalifour (Mont-Laurier, QC) and his pilot Jean Michel Lachance (Quebec City, QC) finished seventh.

“The international level in Para-cycling is constantly rising,” said Sebastien Travers, Head Para Coach at Cycling Canada. “I’m glad to see we can keep up. Our athletes have achieved key performances which have led to high results both in terms of medals and qualification points. It’s above expectations for the level we are currently at. We come out of this world championships very satisfied with where we are two years from the [Tokyo 2020] Games. Besides the medals, we’re having top-5 and top-8 performances from our newcomers, which shows that our NextGen coaches are doing a great job.”

Quebec Singletrack Experience Day 1 Valcartier – Short Punchy Kick Off

Tags:

August 05, 2018 (Valcartier, QC) – Starting easy at the Quebec Singletrack Experience is not really an option. Today’s stage at Valcartier, a Canadian Armed Forces base about 20 minutes outside the city, may have looked tame on paper given that it was billed as one of the shortest stages, but it didn’t take long to figure out why it was short – it was technical and twisty with some exceptionally steep pitches.

Stage 1 start line… © QSE
While the Armed Forces aren’t generally associated with mountain biking, they have built a solid network of running trails on the base, many of which cut across the wider tracks used for biathlon and cross-country skiing. Even though they’re not purpose-built for knobby tires, if you love old-school, this is the place.

Stage 1 set to go © QSE
The riding was similar to what I typically do in the Ottawa-Gatineau area, so the rocks and roots felt like old friends, but there were few sections to relax over the first 19km of the stage. The timed ascent – the longest of the week at 1.7km – was relentless and had me wondering, briefly, if I’d made a mistake in signing up for this. Hell, no! There’s always a descent from the top, and Valcartier’s choppy and narrow downhill sections made every metre of climbing worth it. So did the lakeside finish, the pulled pork buns and the complementary beer from event sponsor Boréale.

Stage 1 underway © QSE
Judging by the mood and comments at the finish, today’s stage received a resounding thumbs-up from most riders, even those unaccustomed to the technical features of the day. While my own finish time was in the bottom half of the pack of 112 registered riders, I was happy that I was able to pace myself with six days yet to come. Kudos go to the 20 or so riders who nailed the 25km course in less than two hours. A fantastic first day.

Day One success © QSE
Technically speaking, however, this was our second ride of the event. Most of the riders joined our warm up yesterday – a stunning night ride through old Québec, complete with police escort, cheers from the crowds on the street and a short tour of the citadel overlooking the city and St. Lawrence river.

Night ride on day zero © QSE
Sadly, this is to be the swan song for Valcartier as a stage for the QSE as we were informed by race organizer, Francois Caletta, during the opening meeting that it would be their final race there. There is always a question of whether a military situation might require the base to close to outside visitors on short notice, which does not make it the ideal location for a stage race. I’m very glad I was able to ride here but will also look forward to seeing what network of trails they replace it with next year. Just hope it’s old-school!

Canada’s Houle Finishes Strong in 8th Overall at Tour of Denmark – De Vos 19th

Tags:

August 05, 2018 (Vordingborg, Denmark) – Canada’s Hugo Houle (Astana Pro Team) finished strong in 8th overall following a 13th-place result in the Stage 4 ITT 19.1 km and was just outside of the top 10 on the final Stage 5 from Faxe to Frederiksberg, 199.1km, placing 11th. Fellow Canuck Adam De Vos (Rally Cycling) finished 19th overall as Wout Van Aert (Bel) Veranda’s Willems Crelan prevailed winning the GC

Hugo Houle © Cor Vos
“It was a good day for me. It happened in the sprint finally, so Minali played his card, but before that, there was a lot of action all day. There was a big wind and a lot of open sections and changes of direction. We expected a border stroke, which means a level where there is no place for everyone on the road, and indeed, it happened,” Houle told Sportcom.

“I was happy because I managed to be at the forefront where we were twenty riders and we were shaking the overall standings. Unfortunately, my leader was not part of me, otherwise we could have made the difference and I could easily go fifth overall and put pressure on the race,” he continued.

“Once on the track, my group of twenty riders got caught up. I attacked again with a group of six riders, but the cohesion was not good and I saw that it would be useless, so I came back in the pack doing my job for Minali for the sprint. I placed it as best as I could. He then lost me a little and he still managed to do a good sprint,” Houle concluded

Team Canada Wins Double Gold & Silver Adding 4 Medals to Tally on Day 2 at UCI Para Road Worlds

Tags:

August 03, 2018 (Maniago, Italy) – Team Canada took home four more medals including two rainbow jerseys on Day Two of the 2018 UCI Para-cycling Road World Championships in Italy, as Toronto’s Shelley Gautier and Calgary’s Michael Sametz, won gold defending their respective individual time trial titles.

Gautier’s victory in the 13.6km women’s T1 was her 13th gold medal marking an unbroken tally of world championship titles since 2010. It was Sametz’s second career title in the 27.2 km men’s C3 event as Matthias Schindler (Ger) was second with Benjamin Watson (Gbr) third.

“I took guidance from my coaches and my training partner and it all went as planned,” said Gautier. “It was a fun race when everything came together perfectly. I’d like to thank all of the Cycling Canada staff who helped Team Shelly win a seventh TT world championships!”

“I felt ok coming in to the Worlds,” said Sametz. “During the TT I realized how good I was feeling and went from there. It was a good fast course – it had everything. And it was great to have the locals coming out and cheering us on.”

Cranbrook, BC’s Tristen Chernove,  the defending world champ, settled for silver in the men’s C2 TT race while Edmonton’s Ross Wilson took home silver in the 13.6km men’s C1 competition bringing Canada’s tally to five medals in two days.

“Silver is obviously a bittersweet pill to swallow,” admitted Wilson. “But the objective is Tokyo not Maniago, and I continue to progress towards my goals. Kudos to our whole support team – we’re building towards excellence at the Paralympics.”

Canada’s Houle 8th and De Vos 15th after Stage 3 at Tour of Denmark

Tags:

August 03, 2018 (Vordingborg, Denmark) – Canada’s Hugo Houle (Astana Pro Team) is currently sitting in the top ten on GC after three stages of the PortNord Tour of Denmark. Three time cyclocross world champion Wout Van Aert (Bel) Veranda’s Willems Crelan is leading with a 6-second gap to Alexander Kamp (Den) Team Waoo in second place.

Hugo Houle © Bettini.net
Houle started well finishing 11th on the fairly straight-forward, 218.4 km, first stage with a flat profile, finishing with circuits around the City of Aalborg. Denmark’s Lasse Norman Hansen of the Aqua Blue Sport team surprised everyone, attacking in the final kilometers narrowly holding off the sprinters for the win. De Vos finished 20th.

On Stage 2 from Viborg to Vejle, 174.2 km, De Vos was 8th on the day as American Robin Carpenter (Rally) rode aggressively in the second stage, holding a small gap through the tough final circuits with breakaway partner Julius Johansen. With every punchy climb, the peloton would continue to shrink, until Alexander Kamp (Den) Team Waoo and Van Aert attacked in the last two kilometers, catching Carpenter and Johansen on the final climb (400m at Max 20%). As Van Aert shot past the breakaway, Camp got held up on the corner, leaving the Belgian to take the win solo. Houle held onto the front group finishing 17th, only losing 11 second to race leader Van Aert.

“With one lap to go, I tried to follow Van Aert’s attack, but we were swarmed by the other teams,” Houle told Sportcom. “Riders from smaller teams were able to go out and Van Aert finally caught the break to win the race. He’s an explosive guy who really excels on this type of terrain. ”

The 27-year-old rider from Saint-Perpétue was happy to not lose too much time, but was disappointed with his positioning heading into the final climb. “For my part, by finishing in the main group, I do not waste too much time. It’s good, but not great either. I began to feel the cramps on the penultimate climb. It was very hot and I was a little too far at the base of the last climb to follow the leaders,” he continued.

The third stage from Naestved to Vordingborg, 178.4 km, saw Houle claim 10th as Van Aert’s teammate, Tim Merlier, took the bunch sprint victory. With no changes to the GC, Houle will take on the 19 kilometer Stage 4 time-trial in Nykøbing Falster at 21 seconds down on the race leader.

Houle has high hopes for the TT stage and overall. “My result on Thursday was good for the general classification and I should be no worse to make the difference in the time trial and climb up the rankings,” added Houle.

The race will culminate on Sunday with the final 199.1km Stage 5 that starts in Faxe and includes nine hilly laps around Frederiksberg until the final podium is decided.

August 01, 2018 (British Columbia) – Well…..August is upon us and after that….September. The FULL cross race season is ALMOST here and we have another wicked year planned. A few series tweaks which we will outline in the next newsletter toward the end of August/2 weeks before Topaz Park.

 © COTR
Time to start planning your race season. Making sure you have days off that are needed. AND…..that dreaded word…..”intervals”.

Welcome to Cross on the Rock new Coffee Sponsor: Eleven Speed Coffee!

1. The Mid Summer CX Race

If you don’t follow Cross on the Rock on the Face Book OR MIVA or are on Facebook at all…and have no friends that race cross that ARE on Facebook you might not have heard about this race. It is in the 3rd year this year…….but it is never guaranteed to happen.

Right now there are 15 spots left in the A race and around 11 in the B race…..so if you want to do this race….get on it!!

Registration link here.

There are MANY names for it:

1) Mid Summer Cross race. (the normal name)
2) Holy Crap Last minute secret Cross Race (Patricks working name for it)
3) MIVA’s The Kona Adventure Team’s Mid-Bike packing trip we came across a Mid Summer Cross race with COTR (My working name for it)

What ever you want to call it. It is coming up tomorrow (Thursday)
Yup….you heard it RIGHT. ONLY 1 DAY until Cross Season starts!

Here are some details you might want to know:

August 2nd.
Diver Lake
5pm Course open for pre riding. Number pick up and sign on open
5:45pm Free Kids race (Little kids race and “almost” full track)
6:15 B race – Race length close to 40 minutes for 1st person
7:15 A Race – Race length close to 50 minutes for 1st person
8:15 course tear down and clean up

Besides the LITTLE KIDS and BIGGER KIDS races there are 2 other categories:

A Race – You’ve been riding and racing all summer with lots of miles in your legs and you’re feeling fit

B Race – You’re pretty sure you remember where you left your bike after Hot cross bunnies last year but you don’t know if you cleaned it. (You will be heckled if we think you belong in the A race)

Either way it’s a fun event no matter which category you pick.

Pre-Registration is MANDATORY we are NOT registering anyone at the race. (Except for kids. Kids can come out for sure!!).

Field is listed to 55 people per race.

Oh…..there is a 30% chance of rain that day if you look at the forecast. PERFECT. Tell your friends. Cross is HERE!!

2. Licence Requirements for 2018

Licensing is confusing. It does not help that every year the licences change. The insurance requirements change and it all starts again…..WHICH LICENCE DO I NEED TO RACE?

So here we go. I will try to explain your options.

1) Don’t buy any license. Race COTR races ONLY. Pay for a Day of Race Licence each time you race $10 for an adult. $5 for youth. This is OK if you are only going to race once or twice a year. But it is a PITA if you are going to race more than that!

2) Buy a “Provincial Ride License” from Cycling BC. $60. If you are going to race 6 or more COTR events this year. This is your best bet but ONLY if you are ONLY going to race Cross on the Rock which is a Grassroots level event.

3) Buy a “Provincial Race License” from Cycling BC.Adult $90. Youth $60. Get this one if you want to race COTR as well as in Vancouver and Provincial Championships.

4) Buy a UCI license (Cost varies depending on age) if you want to race BIGGER races such as UCI races or National Championships.

Those are your current (for this year) options for Cross on the Rock for 2018

3. Race Schedule Outline

We typically publish this schedule in our last newsletter of the year and it goes out to this complete e-mail list. Annually I will get e-mails from people starting around mid January asking when the race schedule will be published. Most of the time it is a “reply” from the newsletter with the newsletter that has the schedule in the body of the e-mail…….to which I reply, “Read the e-mail that you are sending back to me”.

BUT to give everyone the benefit of the doubt that the www ate their original e-mail here is a copy of the schedule outline for 2018

Year #13 of COTR.

This is a “MORE”-SOLID draft at this point. There might be some small variations BUT unlikely that everything would change!

Race #1: Season opener September 9th. Victoria. Currently: Topaz Pre-race day race number and chip pick up at Pro City from 5:00 – 8:00. Same as the last 2 years.

Race #2: September 16th…..back in Cumberland with the Saturday NIGHT pub/taco race. (Moving up 2 weeks from this year) Note: Saturday night taco race is NOT confirmed. Village park IS confirmed.

Race #3: September 30th: Qualicum Beach. Group favourite! (earlier). Confirmed.

Race #4: October 8th: Bowen Park Nanaimo (Status Quo) (YES this is a MONDAY)

Race #5: October 21st: Port Alberni. The return of P.A. Currently one of two possible venues…..but more likely than not a return to McLeans Mill for this year which would be UNREAL!

Race #6: October 28th. Crosstoberfest. MID island. Either at Cowichan Exhibitions, Sun Fest or Ladysmith. Close to confirmation

Race #7: November 4th SINGLE HEADER at MIVA’s choice Venue. Arbutus Meadows or back at Beban

(Nationals champs on the 10th in Peterborough)

Race #8: Series final. November 17th Saanich Fairgrounds OR Speedway for the final race of the year. Need to confirm venue. But in Victoria. Bookending the race season with Victoria races. Looking like Speedway. Close to confirmation.

This series does not happen without the support from.

Poll Says Majority of Torontonians Support Building Protected Bike Lanes

Tags:

August 01, 2018 (Toronto, ON) – A recent poll by the Ekos Research Associates found overwhelming support as 9 out of 10 Toronto residents in the downtown area feel that separated bike lanes are necessary to protect vulnerable road users reports CBC.ca. Suburban areas, such as Etobicoke, North York and Scarborough, showed similar support with over 70% support. The poll was co-sponsored by the David Suzuki Foundation and Cycle Toronto, a cycling advocacy group, following the death of three cyclist and 20 pedestrian in 2018.

Cyclists riding on College Street © Toronto.ca
The most impressive statistic was that three quarters of respondents who commute by car still promote the use of separated cycle lanes, demonstrating that ALL road users wish to see a more organized and safe city layout. Road safety has been a polarizing issue in the city of Toronto with plans such as Vision Zero and the Transform Young having varied success. But with large percentages of the population in support, this poll predicts cycling will be a hot issue in the upcoming municipal elections, slated for October 22.

Geraint Thomas Claims Career-first Victory at 105th Tour de France

Tags:

July 29, 2018 (Paris, FRA) – Geraint Thomas claimed his first overall victory while Tom Dumoulin and Chris Froome rounded out the podium. European champion Alexander Kristoff won the conclusive stage of the 105th Tour de France on the Champs-Elysées in Paris, the second success for UAE Team Emirates after super combative Dan Martin took stage 6 in Mûr-de-Bretagne. It’s Kristoff’s third victory after two stages in 2014.

Stage 21 in Houilles – 145 Starters
In the first kilometres covered on a slow motion, Team Sky celebrated their probable sixth overall victory in seven years. As the race entered Paris throughout the famous avenue Montaigne, the street of fashion, Sylvain Chavanel (Direct Energie) did a lap of honour as this was his 18th and last Tour de France.

After setting this all-time record, the Frenchman decided to retire at the end of the season. Silvan Dillier (AG2R-La Mondiale), Taylor Phinney (EF), Michael Schär (BMC), Damien Gaudin (Direct Energie), Nils Politt (Katusha-Alpecin) and Guillaume van Keirsbulck (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) rode away from the pack with 52km to go.

Lampaert the last attacker to surrender
Groupama-FDJ and Bora-Hansgrohe were the most active teams in the chase. The deficit of the peloton was 40’’ with 20km to go. It was game over for the breakaway riders 6km before the end as Politt was the last man to surrender at bell lap.

Marco Marcato (UAE Team Emirates) rode away from the peloton 2.5km before the line to force the other sprinters’ teams to spend some energy before the last rush. Daniel Oss (Bora-Hansgrohe) countered but Belgian champion Yves Lampaert (Quick Step) was the last man to try and stay away from the pack.

Alexander Kristoff © Cor Vos
He was eventually swallowed with 250 metres to go, firstly by Trek-Segafredo working for stage 9 winner John Degenkolb but Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates) was the fastest of the remaining sprinters while stage 18 winner Arnaud Démare (Groupama-FDJ) rounded out the stage podium.

Thomas Won the 105th Tour de France
Geraint Thomas wrote another page of British cycling history after sealing an incredible overall victory at the Tour de France.
The 32 year old became only the third Brit and first ever Welshman to win the yellow jersey, with an eventual winning margin of one minute and 51 secondsafter three weeks of hard racing.

Rolling into Paris alongside his teammates, Thomas’ victory represents the sixth success in seven years for Team Sky at the world’s biggest bike race.

Four-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome was able to join Thomas on the podium after securing third place with a gutsy ride on Saturday’s time trial. Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) finished second and joined the duo on the fan-lined Champs-Elysees.

Final TdF 2018 podium © Cor Vos

After thanking his teammates on the podium, he added: “I got into cycling because of this race. I remember running home from school to watch the Tour de France and the dream was always just to be a part of it. That came through 11 years ago back in 2007. Now I’m here, stood in the yellow jersey. It’s incredible and it’s a dream come true.

“To everyone back home, kids and the Maindy Flyers, just dream big. If people tell you it can’t be done, if you believe in yourself and work hard just keep going. You’re going to have knocks and downs. But keep believing, anything is possible and with hard work everything pays off in the end. Thanks for all the support!”

West Carleton Gravel Series Gets Underway Aug. 5 – Register TODAY

July 23, 2018 (Kinburn, ON) – The West Carleton Gravel Series gets underway on Aug. 5 at the Kinburn Community Centre. The three-race Ontario Cycling Association sanctioned road cyclosportif series has courses that range from 80 to 90 km.

Organizers Brendan Gorman and Alain Villeneuve are hard at work organizing the first event and just rode the first course, which is 87 kilometres with 430 metres of elevation, two-thirds gravel, one-third pavement and includes a 700 metre unmaintained road climb.

“The fastest riders will be able to complete the course in about two hours while others may take as long as three or four hours,” wrote Gorman, in a blog post describing the course. “Regardless, it will be a challenging course for all and will appeal equally to those wanting to race and those looking to ride some great roads in a challenge type event. No doubt the beauty of the course will at least initially stave off the fatigue of completing the inaugural event of the West Carleton Gravel Series.”

Gorman says, he and Villeneuve are hoping to attract adventure and racing cyclists.

“I sincerely feel that the expansion of gravel racing/riding will be good for everyone and anyone whose lives are intertwined with cycling,” says Gorman. “The ability to attract the adventure and racing cyclists under one umbrella creates so much opportunity to grow the sport.”

Gorman, a former national team member and Junior road race champion (1996) who currently races Masters 1, is a big fan of the terrain near his home in the area.

“West Carleton has some of the greatest gravel roads in the area and I know them all,” says Gorman, who also blogs about gravel racing and the routes in the area at Nine2fivepro.com.

Gorman also recently launched the Kinburn Kermesse gravel cycling race series in Lanark County outside Ottawa, Ontario,

The West Carleton Gravel series is $20 per race, or $50 for all three races.

Inaugural Official Provincial Fixie Crit Championships Coming to Québec on Aug. 4

Tags:

July 20, 2018 (Victoriaville, QC) – Pedal has learned that Quebec will host its first official provincial championships in fixie crit racing, confirmed by Louis Barbeau, Director General of Québec’s Cycling Federation (FQSC). The brakeless bike races, one for men and another for women, will take place during the provincial Criterium Championships in Victoriaville, on August 4.

 ©
Similar events were raced in 2016 when the Québec Crit championships took place in Bromont. Back then, though, the competitions were unofficial and featured as demos. “We felt there was a growing interest toward the fixie scene. That’s what started the process of integrating fixed gear racing to FQSC as a distinct discipline,” explained Barbeau.

Two years later, FQSC came up with a brand new set of rules for fixies. “These rules were designed to be as accessible as possible in order to stimulate participation,” said Marilou Fauteux, who supervised this integration for the federation. “As an example, a rider who already owns a road licence does not have to purchase a second one specific to fixies. Also, if someone is lapped during a fixie criterium, he or she can stay in the race instead of getting a DNF,” she explained.

Alexis Pinard, the Québec Criterium championships organizer who also puts on the Appalachian Classic, was asked by FQSC to hold fixie championships in mid-May. “We gladly accepted, even though it is uncharted territories for us,” he admitted. “The fixed gear riders will race on the same one kilometre or so loop as the road cyclists, in downtown Victoriaville. “There are no hairpin bends and one little hill on the course. I think it will be a good show.”

Other fixed gear criterium racing events can be found on the FQSC calendar this season. One took place during the Crossroads Tremblant, at the end of May; the next one is scheduled for July 29, during the Critérium du centre-ville de Bromont.

There are several experienced fixie riders in Québec. One of them is Raphaële Lemieux (Specialized Rocket Espresso), who won the women’s Redhook Crit Brooklyn, NY on April 28. Others are Josh Gieni (Team iBike), owner of two cycling shops in Montreal and Cowansville, and Addison Zawada (Team iBike), an American rider who recently received his permanent residency in Canada.

Legendary Tour de l’Abitibi Celebrates 50th Anniversary – An Amazing Journey

Tags:

July 18, 2018 (Val D’or, Que.) – The 50th anniversary of the legendary Tour de l’Abitibi is underway July 16-22 in northwestern Quebec some 600 kilometres north of Montreal and 800 kilometres from Toronto.

Léandre Normand © Tour de l’Abitibi
Founded by Léandre Normand back in 1969, the event highlighted riders and the racing scene from small towns such as Amos and Val D’or in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region, where mining for minerals such as gold and zinc is a key part of the communities. Hockey as well…lots of hockey.

But every summer for the last 50 years, the region is overrun by Spandex as it plays host to the iconic cycling stage race, Tour de l’Abitibi, for junior riders, that’s become renowned around the globe. The towns embrace it and come out by the hundreds to volunteer and line the roadways to cheer on the next generation of cycling heroes.

1975 – Pierre Harvey (CAN) ©
Heroes such as Pierre Harvey, honourary President of this year’s 50th anniversary Tour, who credits the race with giving him the confidence to launch his career, which included competing at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal before competing in the 1984 Winter Olympics. Harvey was the first Canadian male athlete to compete in both a winter and summer Games.

“This was my first big result and it convinced me that I had some potential,” said Harvey. “From there I became more confident and invested all I had to get as far as I could. Soon after, I succeeded in participating in four Olympic Games, but my journey began in Abitibi. I went to school in Abitibi! to learn about cycling.”

As the only North American stop out of eight competitions that comprise the UCI Juniors Nations Cup, its humble beginning saw 52 cyclists on the start line for three stages. Fifty years later over 4,000 riders from 45 countries have pedalled their lanky cabooses through the northern region of Quebec dotted with small towns.

The famous seven-stage race has included competitors from outside Quebec since 1973 and European teams have been attending since the early ’80s. In 1986, Netherlands’ Michael Zanoli, the reigning Junior world champion, won the Tour.

According to Marc Lemay, former president of Cycling Canada, the Tour de l’Abitibi began as a season-end race similar to the 3-stage Cyclo-Nordo Challenge already organized by Leandre and his brother Yvan with cyclists from the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region competing. Soon after teams from Montreal and Ontario joined in along with more Quebec riders.

Marc Lemay ©
In 1981 the first international team from France participated and the Tour received its first UCI sanction becoming a juniors-only race. The original format was point-to-point but a “star” system was later adopted that “likely saved the Tour” said Lemay even-though he admits he wasn’t in favour of it at first.

Under the new “star” system all stages finished in the same town which acted as the hostfor that particular year. With four towns involved – Rouyn-Noranda, Amos, Val d’Or, La Sarre – and a two-year mandate for each, the Tour was guaranteed for eight more years.

Gerald Rocheleau © Tour de l’Abitibi
The Tour de l’Abitibi debuted in 1969 with Gerald Rocheleau crossing the finished line first to win the inaugural Tour in the town of Amos. Decades later, the list of Tour winners and participants has grown to include some of the greatest cyclists on the planet from top Canadians Steve Bauer and Alex Stieda (winner in 1980) to Laurent Jalabert (France) and Americans Bobby Julich and Andy Hampsten.

1980 – Alex Stieda (CAN) ©
For Rocheleau, the Tour De l’Abitibi is one of the only trophies he’s kept after all these years. “It was the first time I was taking part in such a big race. There were people sitting in patio chairs around the course to look at us pedalling,” Rocheleau says. “I still have the trophy that I won there and it stayed for a long time in my kids’ bedroom. I got rid of my other trophies but not this one.”

The race has become not only a unique competition in Canada, but also a crucial one for young riders who dream of making their mark in the world of international cycling, according to Louis Barbeau, Director General of Quebec’s Cycling Federation (FQSC).

“The Tour of Abitibi has been and still is an essential event in the development of young riders for 50 years. For most junior riders who have participated in this event, it has been their first contact with the international scene and a chance to measure themselves against some of the best athletes in the world,” says Barbeau. “We are very fortunate to have such an event in Quebec and in Canada, and very grateful to the organization who has relentlessly worked hard over the years to offer and amazing race to our athletes.”

Volunteers © Tour de l’Abitibi
The crowds and the volunteers are part of what makes the race so memorable and so thrilling for the young riders often cutting their teeth on their first races with international competition. When you start a race with passionate people at the helm, it tends to translate to the race volunteers and the surrounding region. Such is the case with the Tour de l’Abitibi that began with founder Léandre Normand and a group of cycling zealots from the Abitibi area.

“We can say that it’s about a bunch of passionate people, not to say maniacs, crazy about cycling, who, at this given time, started to focus on something else than hockey,” says Normand. “I was avidly gulping cycling magazines and we then decided, in a joint move, to get together and organize a stage race and showcase genuine Abitibian experiences. It just kept on expanding.”

Racing © Tour de l’Abitibi
Over the years, many of the most notable North American cyclists attended the race, with the exception of Greg LeMond and Lance Armstrong. For Steida, the first North American to wear the Tour de France yellow jersey, who won the Tour de l’Abitibi back in 1980, it was a chance to compete against the best and helped hook him on cycling.

“Winning Abitibi 38 years ago feels like a dream,” said Steida. “It was so long ago, we (the British Columbia provincial team) really didn’t know what we were doing then. We were just racing hard and aggressive every day. Back then we were restricted to a 50×15 so my track racing background helped me a lot. My hockey experience gave me the power. I had great teammates with me who absolutely sacrificed for me. I can’t thank them enough. It was that feeling of shared accomplishment that drew me deeper into the sport.”

Louis Garneau © Tour de l’Abitibi
For Louis Garneau it was a big stepping stone in his cycling career. “The Tour of Abitibi was one of my first big races as a junior, in 1975 and 76, and I will never forget the experience. The Tour de l’Abitibi has always been a big, well-organized race and teams from all over are participating year after year. This race did a lot for me to gain experience, and helped propel me to the forefront of racing. My junior years were very formative, and launched my career all the way to the Olympics. They did the same for my son William, who raced in Abitibi in 2007 and again in 2008 as part of Team Canada – on his way to the World Championships. Abitibi was a big part of both our junior careers and I want to send them my warmest congratulations on the occasion of their 50th Anniversary, a true milestone in a great organization’s history. Happy 50th, and all the best for the next 50 editions,” said Garneau.

The event has played an important role for Cycling Canada as well. “Abitibi has long played a pivotal role in the development of some of Canada’s best male cyclists. We are fortunate and incredibly grateful to have such a passionate community that has sustained such a successful and impactful event,” commented Matthew Jeffries Interim CEO/Director of Marketing at Cycling Canada.

The Abitibi-Temiscamingue has been a proud partner since the beginning. “It’s a unique event in North America! In addition to highlighting the cyclists next generation, it also has made our region, Abitibi-Temiscamingue, shine for 50 years,” said Emilien Larochelle, the chairman of Tourisme Abitibi-Témiscamingue.

La route des champions ©
For the 50th anniversary celebrations, a book chronicling each and every race as well as the history of the event has been released entitled La Route des Champions, penned by Normand along with Olivier Grondin and Emelie Rivard-Boudreau. There will also be a tribute evening on July 21 that will including the first five nominees to be inducted to the Tour de l’Abitibi Hall of Fame as well as a Tour of Legends featuring participants from the past 49 years of racing.

For Normand, who managed the race for the first 10 years, seeing how the Tour has not only grown but thrived over the past 50 years is what matters most.

“What makes me the most proud, it’s that it’s still there 50 years later,” he says. “For me, it’s this longevity rather than the international scope and reputations it acquired throughout the years that matters most.”
