November 18, 2008 (Heriot Bay, B.C) – Sam Whittingham found the podium twice at the first annual “Unofficial All Mountain Classic” bicycle event hosted by the Heriot Bay Inn (HBI) on Quadra Island, BC. The all day event took place on Nov 15, 2008 as part of the Freeride Entertainment New World Disorder 9 “˜Never Enough” World Tour.
The first event of the day was a “Road Style Poker Rally” where after a shotgun start from the Heriot Bay Inn parking lot, riders headed south down West road in search of their own royal flush. Although on this day it was Darren Wilman’s three kings that conquered the asphalt and lead him into a 1st place finish.
After a short intermission for lunch, riders headed up island into the mystical Chinese Mountains for the second event of the day. In surpassing his nearest competitor by a full minute during the “Timed Hill Climb” world record holder Sam Whittingham truly displayed his unique strength and ability in cycling. Humorously, Whittingham also managed to overcome the shuttle vehicle transporting the event timekeepers up the mountain. With a first place finish of 12 minutes 30 seconds, Sam “the fast man” Whittingham has undoubtedly set the mark for next year’s challengers.
Ending out the afternoon down the almost famous “BAKSEAT DRIVER” was the adrenalin-filled DH event. With spectators lining the trail, competitors awaited anxiously for their number to be called. Although conditions were humid, racers did manage to challenge the standing course record of 7 minutes 30 seconds.
First place was awarded to Garnet Kehn with a time of 7 minutes 37 seconds followed by Tanner Pressner clocking in at 8 minutes 33 seconds. Whittingham (founder of Naked Bikes) placed third convincingly. Following the race, every one who’s anyone gathered back at the HBI for a wonderful Mexican buffet, a few socials and a great mountain bike video. Big up to Freeride, NWD9 ripped!
