July 15, 2003 – Last year, Pieter de Hart (NL) realized a one-hour World record by cycling 26.948 km. In May 2003 his record was improved: 29.1 kms and is now the distance to beat.

But isn't Chris Boardman (UK) the indoor one-hour record holder since October 27, 2000 at 49.441 kms?

Both right. Boardman, however, was sitting on the saddle while he was bicycling. And de Hart ? He was sitting on his handlebars. He is the world's first Backwards One Hour World Record holder! The exercycling for new records continues. This year Pieter plans to push his limits and overcome the impossible: he is thinking of an average of more than 30 kms in sixty minutes!

So, the record wheels start rolling again. This Summer the World record attempt will take place in Millbrook (Bedfordshire), United Kingdom. On the 2-mile Oval, the High/Constant Speed Circuit at the Millbrook Proving Ground (http://www.millbrook.co.uk)

Date:   Monday, August 25, 2003 (Summer Bank Holiday) Start:  Approx. 8:30am, local time

And Pieter will of course be sitting again on the handlebars.

Pieter is bicycling in the UK with one purpose: to make bike history! This must become the ultimate Backwards Cycling One Hour World Record. At least the first backwards cyclist who passes the 30K line! But, success is not only a matter of the conditions, it depends also on weather: dry weather and no wind are the conditions necessary.

By the way: 25-08 is not only about the Backwards One Hour World Record – Pieter will also cycle backwards 50 K attempting to beat the record of 1.46.59 hrs.
