February 9, 2004 – The Women's Cycling Task Force was formed at the Yoplait Women's Cycling Summit Conferences held at the Nature Valley Grand Prix and Interbike. The mission of the Task Force is to build women's cycling at both the grassroots and elite level in North America. A number of the key goals set at these conferences have been achieved or are close to completion.
The recently announced Women's Prestige Cycling Series was born at the Yoplait Summit at the Nature Valley Grand Prix. This women-only series will highlight women's racing by creating a spotlight that the women do not have to share with the men. Series events include the Redlands Bicycle Classic (March 24-28), the Nature Valley Grand Prix (June 9-13), the Tour de Toona/International (July 26-Aug. 1) and the Bermuda Grand Prix (Sept. 23-26).
Considerable progress has also been made on a third goal: to identify and study outstanding women's grassroots programs around the country, and then distribute that information on the Task Force Web site. To date, 86 programs have been identified and 40 of them are working with a Task Force subcommittee to help others around North America replicate their success. The Task Force expects to release this information on its Web site in the near future.
The next Yoplait Women's Cycling Summit Conference will be held in June at the Nature Valley Grand Prix. —
