September 15, 2003 – Starting next summer the Whistler Mountain Bike Park will open 2,200 vertical feet of new terrain. The Garbanzo Express chairlift will begin operating to provide access to three new trails. Dave Kelly and his dedicated park crew have been hard at work creating the new expert trails that will be ready to open in July 2004. Additional trails will be constructed  during the 2004 summer season.

The continued success of the Whistler Mountain Bike Park, which has seen park visits increase by 500% in the last five years, has prompted the new terrain  development. “With riders of all abilities flocking to the Whistler Mountain Bike Park, we wanted to provide a new and unique experience for our guests,” said Rob McSkimming, Whistler Bike  Park visionary. “The Garbanzo expansion provides more vertical, more challenge and more terrain; just what our riders have been asking  for.”

The new Garbanzo area will feature trails that begin at the edge of the alpine while winding through old growth forests and acres of rock, with breathtaking views of the Coast Mountains at every turn. While alpine descents are not new to the Whistler Mountain Bike Park, in the past they have been guided trips. The Garbanzo area is one that riders will be able to explore on their own. Early previews have produced positive feedback.

Cedric Gracia, bike legend and local is enthusiastic. “It's going to be fantastic! The view is amazing. People will be stopping to enjoy the view as much as the ride. I can't wait!”

The addition of the Garbanzo terrain will significantly grow the Whistler Mountain Bike Park. Lift capacity will double, reducing lineups. Initial trails will be designed for experts, but the potential for expansion is virtually limitless. And with an additional 2,200 feet of terrain the Whistler Mountain Bike Park will grow by 200%, with a total of 3,400 vertical feet to fuel your biking obsession. With much more vertical, increased lift capacity and epic descents the Whistler Mountain Bike Park continues to set the standard for lift serviced mountain biking.
