July 5, 2002 – Blue skies and a crisp breeze greeted riders at Whistler’s
Mountain Bike Air Downhill on July 5th. With less than three weeks notice,
organizers were able to put the event together, taking advantage of the
cancellation of the downhill events at the Grouse Mountain World Cup.
Because of the short notice cancellation, some international riders were
still scheduled to be in BC, including big name riders Anne-Caroline
Chausson, Cedric Gracia, and Steve Peat.
The Air Downhill took place on Whistler Bike Park’s A-line course. With
more than 35 tabletops on this course, riders were more out to have fun
than anything. The course demanded a lot of pedaling and control. The
riders who kept low on the jumps were coming across with the fastest times.
With only one rider being taken down on a stretcher with a possible broken
collarbone, most riders came down unharmed. The race gathered tons of
spectators, all cumulating at the end to watch the Sol Superhit Dirt Jump
contest.
