Whiskey 50 Off-Road Endurance XC Full Results – Zanstra 3rd

by pedalmag.com

April 27, 2014 (Prescott, AZ) – The third day of the 2014 Whiskey Off-Road endurance mountain bike event in Prescott, AZ brought blue skies, tacky soil and near perfect conditions for some of the worlds most elite mountain bike racers to showcase their talents while in pursuit of the $40,000 equal payout cash purse.

Christoph Sauser (marathon world champion), in his debut at the Whiskey Off-Road, proved to be the dominant rider after battling all the way to a sprint finish with S Team mate Todd Wells and Canadian National Champion Derek Zandstra. Close behind was Scott-Rotor USA rider Fernando Riveros Paez finishing in a very respectable fourth place.  Howard Grotts, after absolutely lighting up the formidable climb from Skull Valley to Sierra Prieta Overlook, secured the fifth podium spot finishing just a minute and half off of race leader Sauser.

In the women’s field Chloe Woodruff (backcountry.com) placed her stamp of authority on the weekend by doubling up with wins in Fridays Fat Tire Criterium  and todays Pro Cross Country event. But today wasn’t without challenge, Chloe duked it out to the end with Tokyo Joe’s Erin Huck. Huck, Woodruff and Evelyn Dong traded turns taking pulls on the front throughout most of the days effort. Each launching their own attacks from time to time. Huck and Woodruff put time into Dong during the final 8 mile descent off of Sierra Prieta Overlook. Woodruff managed to pull around Huck upon approach to the finish line claiming a noted victory in her hometown.

Of the $40,000 cash purse, Chloe Woodruff and Christoph Sauser each won $6,500 for their first place finishes.

Rounding out the weekend, Jamestown Revival started off the morning with great tunes while the Shimano Youth Series Kids Fun Ride gave over 200 kids their very own shot at the Whiskey. From kick bikes to training wheels to full blown unassisted pedal power, all kids soaked up their own victory’s while often times sharing the experience with family and friends.
