August 7, 2002 – (Victoria, BC) – Sandra Walter pulled off one of her bestresults ever finishing second atthe 2002 Canada Cup finals in Fernie on August 4th. Walter rode a strongrace, in finishing a close second to race winner, and Canada Cup Championin 2001 and 2002, Kiara Bisaro. Not only did this result garner Walter hersecond Canada Cup podium of the season, it also propelled her into secondplace overall in the final Canada Cup rankings and secured her a spot onthe Canadian National Team to compete at the 2002 World Mountain BikeChampionships to be held in Austria on August 31. Walter is among only 7Canadian women chosen to represent Canada at this year’s WorldChampionships.
“Walter’s selection to the National Team comes as a pleasant surprise tothe Kappa team. We were hoping that Walter would have some consistentCanada Cup finishes this year with a podium or two, but she has exceededall expectations throughout the season,” said Steve Lund, Walter’s coachand Kappa Team Director. Working with talented young women has alwaysbeen the goal of the Kappa Team, Walter’s results this year have confirmedthat the team and its sponsors are on the right track.
As Walter now focuses on her training for the rest of August another of herteammates, Sandy Espeseth will be looking to win back her National RoadChampionship which she won in 2000. In 2001 current National Champion LynneBessette edged out Espeseth in a close sprint finish to take the title. Thisyear’s National Road Championships take place this weekend in Waterloo,Ontario.
