Victoria\’s 1994 Commonwealth Games Velodrome in Jeopardy?

May 27, 2008 (Victoria, BC) – Victoria’s 1994 Commonwealth Games Velodrome could be in jeopardy according to an article in today’s Victoria Times Colonist. The track is under-used according to other sports including football, soccer and rugby who are now vying for a new stadium at the Juan de Fuca sporting complex next to Bear Mountain Arena on the site where the velodrome is located.

Just four months ago, the Victoria Rebels junior football team and fledgling Victoria Highlanders soccer club made a splashy joint announcement that they would begin playing at a new public-private stadium at Hull’s Field in Langford in 2009. Also included was potential Team Canada rugby involvement.

But the site for the proposed stadium may now be shifted. The West Shore Parks and Recreation Society (WSPR) has revived its hopes of locating the stadium next to Bear Mountain Arena by filling in the 1994 Commonwealth
Games velodrome.

That plan, however, is drawing criticism from the cycling community, including the Canadian Olympic coach for the 2008 Beijing Summer Games.
