Veal Report: Beaufort Memorial Cycling Classic

by Ed Veal

May 4, 2011 (Beaufort, South Carolina) – I think this race tested me more than the others. After going down a few times (3) at Roswell, it took a few laps to become fearless again. Beaufort is a fast narrow course and I found it very hard to move up. UnitedHealthcare was in full control the entire race and it was very hard to do anything but follow the black and blue train.

A group of 11 got away and lapped the field but it was well represented by United. When any other move got established, United tracked it down. Very impressive to watch and be a part of, but hard to imagine doing anything else other than follow, because of the pace they were setting.

With five to go, it was time for them to rip everyone’s legs off. Their lead-out had guys leaving gaps everywhere. If you lost the wheel, you were toast. I was very happy to stay on and sprint for 22nd place – my best NRC finish.

Next stop Waterboro! I now know I can hang with these guys, the time is now to try to get off the front.
