October 5, 2010 (Park City, Utah) – The 2010 Vanier Park Cyclocross Classic was a smash success, pulling in record numbers with almost 200 participants of all ages. West Coast Racing and Trek Red Truck Racing were proud to host the longest running event in the BC Cup CX series near downtown Vancouver set against the beautiful backdrop of Stanley Park and north shore mountains.

In the mens’ category 1/2 start Tyler Trace, 4th place finisher at the 2009 national championships, represented strongly for event co-hosts Trek Red Truck Racing p/b Mosaic Homes. Trace made his move over the middle laps to establish a gap, then held his half minute advantage over a small band of chasers to rack up his 2nd straight win at Vanier. National under 23 champ Evan Guthrie (Rocky Mountain Bicycles) was the fastest finisher from the group, taking the previous day’s New Brighton CX winner Kevin Calhoun (Rocky Mountain-Different Bikes) at the line, with Drew Mackenzie (Island Racing Club p/b Cameron Law) and Kevin Noiles (La Bicicletta Pro Shop) filling out the podium.
Jean Ann McKirdy (Local Ride Racing) continued her strong start to the CX season, completing a weekend double that was never in doubt. Jean Ann also gave 2 thumbs up for the revised layout by course designer and race director Sven Sturm. “I really liked the new course, and found it really flowy and fast. It was rideable and fun for all abilities, which is great”. Ann Yew (Team Whistler) concurred, adding, “Great venue and organization – thanks! Loved twisting through the trees, running up the stairs and the challenge of trying to get myself and bike over the barriers on the hill, 7x lucky! First weekend of cross racing ever and you can be sure I’ll be back for more”. Kelly Jones (North Shore Sports Medicine), Stacey Hutton (Mighty Riders) and Nicola Mann rounded out the podium with solid rides from each.
Graeme Martindale (Team TNA Shape) nearly saw a whole event of work near the front go to waste in the master men 35+ race, but drew upon his experience to stay calm and peg back an 8 second deficit on the final lap to overhaul 3 close adversaries of the day. Kim Steed (Steed Cycles) and Island CX super-organizer Normon Thibault (Frontrunners) brought home the 2nd and 3rd spots respectively in an extremely close finale.
Other category winners were Peter Whalen (Local Ride Racing) in the men under 17, Paul McCloskey (Mighty Riders) for the men category 3, Eric Robertson (Kissena Cycling Club) for the men 4, Greg Johnson taking the citizen men, plus Hannah Nubeck (WWU) for the citizen women. Special mention goes to our brave group of young womens’ racers, who collectively decided amongst themselves to scrap the planned U17 category so that they could help make a larger field for the citizen womens’ race, putting in some excellent results along the way!
Bike Gallery brought out their huge array of spare Mavic Ksyrium wheels all set up for CX action to operate a neutral wheel pit service, while Steed Cycles made sure all the participants in the kids’ U10 and U15 fun races left with a smile and a prize pack. M&M Meat Shops were on hand once again to fill up some hungry stomachs with a free BBQ allowing spectators and racers to settle in and watch some close quarters racing.
Dedicated volunteers, Cycling BC staff, commissaires and a special contribution of lap by lap timing courtesy of Andrew Paradowski all kept the nuts and bolts attached behind the scenes.
Once again we had a great list of sponsors helping us to run the event plus provide a stack of great podium and draw prizes including;
