Vancouver’s Junkyard Cross Report, Full Results, PHOTOS – Heralded Mud

by Ryan Cousineau

October 25, 2017 (Vancouver, BC) – Junkyard Cross by SORCE was held on Saturday, Oct. 21 as part of the ongoing Vancouver Cyclocross Coalition series, and it was a wet one. The forecast was for rain in great supply; the course was soaked, but not so bad as some predicted. Nonetheless, this was a muddy day, and technicians had their way with power riders. More than 250 racers rolled up to the starting line in all categories.

The route was grass, pavement, and singletrack; mud made the toughest corners harder. There was one major, muddy run-up, but also some lesser spots where dismounting was a viable option.

The signature feature of Junkyard is its plunge into the trails. This year that meant a serious full-speed descent with a kink halfway down and a challenging sharp right hander at the bottom. Carrying speed through this section was a test of courage, possibly of the Dutch variety.

Local hero Craig Richey was off racing in Ontario, but his Garneau-Easton teammate Michael van den Ham ably repped the brands, comfortably gapping Elite Men runner-up Nathan Killiam. Nicholas Kupiak, one of several Broad Street riders who made the trip over from Vancouver Island to check out the twenty-first century, cruised to third place.

On the distaff side, the familiar pattern returned: Liv/Giant’s Sandra Walter demonstrated her usual combo of power and cyclocross skill, and gapped the powerful engine of Sho-Air’s Jasmin Duehring. Veteran Kelly Jones rounded out the podium, but the youth movement was not that far behind, with a teenaged Elizabeth Gin taking fourth on behalf of the Cannondale squad.

Controversy dogged the Novice women’s race, when a timing error led to an early finish, with winner Michelle Heneghan rolling home at 24:20. On the positive side, there were plenty of unhappy novice women, as their field of 20 comprised a major part of the more than 50 women and girls who participated in all categories.

In the degenerate Singlespeed category, 13 entrants set out, and when the mud landed, Giant’s Steve Devantier took the win, and his lap times demonstrated that on this course, not shifting was hardly a disadvantage.

Other notable low-category results: U17 winner Lief Rodgers (Devo) laid down a faster lap than Intermediate victor Grant Gill (but Grant’s commitment to taking liquid handups has made him a legend forever); rookie cyclocrosser Jeremy Seamans outsprinted Neils Steiner for Master B glory; Kim Steed, racing for Steed cycles, spurred his steed on to a win in Master A.

A wide variety of illegal feed zones were observed on course, and as an aid to commissaires, we provide a summary:

Multicolored licorice: “the yellow is best”
Marshmallows: an obvious trap, best avoided
”Hot” cocoa: lukewarm at best
Whole donuts and donut holes: everybody thinks they can eat a whole donut during a bike race; hardly anybody can
Beer: tastiest when snagged from unwary fans in the beer garden
Amaretto: very welcome on a cold day
Thai rum: inexplicably popular…
