Vancouver’s Hornby Street Bike Lane Approved – City Crews Start Work

release by the City of Vancouver

October 19, 2010 (Vancouver, BC) – Construction work on a new separated bike lane on the east side of Hornby Street has begun following approval for the Hornby separated bike lane by City Council on October 5. The work is scheduled to take approximately 10 weeks and finish before the Christmas holiday season. Work on Hornby Street will stretch from Hastings Street to Beach Avenue, with the bike lane offering a connection to the Dunsmuir and Burrard separated bike lanes.

Work will begin with surveying, modifications to traffic signals, curb and gutter work, repainting traffic lines and relocation of stormwater catch basins. The work over the next two weeks will be most impactful, with continuing work progressing with fewer crews and less disruption to the corridor. Construction is weather dependent. The construction will also include a connection to the Seaside bike route at the Vancouver Convention Centre through Hastings and Burrard Streets.

Intersections will generally remain open to at least one lane of traffic on Hornby during construction. People are asked to consider alternate routes as Hornby Street traffic will experience delays.

During construction there will be restrictions to parking on Hornby on both sides of the street. As work progresses, these restrictions will be lifted. In addition, 160 parking spots are currently being added to Seymour and Howe Streets.

Businesses on Hornby remain open and accessible during construction. The City will continue working with businesses throughout the construction period to accommodate business needs; stopping lanes in front of businesses and loading zones will be installed wherever possible.

Concrete removed during construction will be recycled at a City facility.
