September 17, 2003 – 29-year-old Aussie Matt White is currently racing hard for his US Postal squad in the Tour of Spain. Tuesday, September 16 was a rest day at the Vuelta, so Pedal took the opportunity to talk to the gritty rider from Sydney.
Pedal: Matt, it's been a great year for Aussies in cycling. How does it feel to be part of the Aussie phenomenon and racing for one of the best teams in the world?
White: It sure has been a big year from Aussie cycling. We're all good mates and it can't but help seeing each other have such successful results.
Pedal: You've raced on a variety of teams over your career – what kind of reputation as a rider would you like to think you've garnered for yourself over the years?
White: I am not really a specialist in any specific area but I like to think of myself as someone who can help out at a good level in all facets of the sport: whether it's in the cobbled classics or at the three week races. I am a team person that can joke around and keep the morale up.
Pedal: What do you do for kicks and laughs when you aren't doing stage races in Spain?
White: When I am in Europe I enjoy just hanging out at home, but when I am in Australia I like to enjoy the summers in Sydney, eating out, having a few beers at a BBQ, that sort of thing.
Pedal: What role will you have at the Hamilton Road Worlds?
White: Now that Cadel Evans won't be competing I am free to ride my own race which I am looking forward to because last year the Vuelta put me in great condition for the World Championships. So, realistically, I would like to play a roll in the final laps of the race.
Pedal: Does Michael Barry snore? What's he like as a roommate? (Be honest, we won't tell him.)
White: Even though we are on an American team we have the same sense of humour and have similar personalities. I think it is a Commonwealth thing. We both enjoy a little curry on our potatoes after the races. Having a good roommate in a three-week stage race is an important thing, it really is.
