November 1, 2004 – The Crank Brothers USGP of Cross crossed over the
country to the east coast fishing village of Gloucester, MA. With
back-to-back races on essentially the same course, the athletes were
treated to spectacular racing on a demanding course.

Saturday dawned with low-lying fog, cold temperatures and light rain. A
2:30 starting time saw the racecourse change dramatically from the earlier
warm up periods. The heavy mist continued to roll in off the ocean
creating very slippery conditions in the corners and through the tight
technical woodsy sections. At the gun, the pack launched up the asphalt
starting climb with a full hour of racing on tap. Maxxis-Giant riders
Geoff Kabush and Adam Craig attacked into the lead group, helping to force
the pace and split up the pack. After 4 laps, Craig rolled off the front
and opened an immediate gap. With teammate Kabush in the chase group
sitting in and making the others chase, team tactics played an important
and conclusive part of the day. Craig continued on the gas and continued
to increase the real estate between himself and the 4 chasers.

As the lap cards came out showing five to go, the chase group made
contact with Craig and Ryan Trebon (Kona) immediately counterattacked.
Kabush grabbed Trebon’s wheel as the leaders rolled through the sandpits
and headed into the final chicane. Craig regained his breath in the group
and launched off after the disappearing twosome. Kabush attacked is fellow
breakaways and soloed across the line taking the victory. Craig just
missed the sprint settling for third on the day. A solid team ride for
Jonny Sundt netted him an impressive 11th position for the day. On the
podium Geoff Kabush took over the USGP Leaders Jersey for the serious with
a solid lead over the next placed rider.

Sunday’s race day saw a major shift in the weather with blue skies, sun
and warm temperatures. The group saw very few changes from the previous
day but the drying conditions presented the riders with a faster course.
The group surged up the starting climb and onto the single track stringing
the large group across the venue. Kabush immediately went to the leading
group, setting himself up for the latter portions of the race and playing
the pre race tactics to a tee. Teammate Craig had mechanical problems and
was forced to change bikes losing time and even more valuable rhythm. Jonny
Sundt put in a huge charge, gaining contact and immediately rolling to the
front in an effort to close the gap to Todd Wells (Hyundai-GT).

The lead group slowly dwindled as Sundt pushed the pace with Trebon,
Kabush and Wells enjoying the fruits of his labor. With 4 laps for go,
Sundt had dropped back to help Craig while Kabush worked with Trebon and
Wells to maintain a gap over a hard charging Marc Gullickson (Redline).
With a lap remaining, Trebon launched a blistering attack with Kabush just
able to respond. These two drag raced to the finish with Trebon just
edging Kabush to take the win. Craig maintained his position of 7th on the
day as Sundt rolled in at 9th. Geoff Kabush again donned the USGP Leaders
Jersey with a clear points advantage while teammate Adam Craig moved into
third overall in the series.
