October 7, 2009 (Guelph, ON) – The last race of the 2009 University Cup mountain bike race series took place this past weekend at the Ganaraska Forest, near Port Hope, Ontario. Student athletes from 12 universities and colleges from across Ontario put in a great day of cross-country mountain bike racing, and reported having a great time at the event.

For the second year in a row the University of Guelph Mountain Bike Club managed to post the points needed to take home the silver plated University Cup trophy. Stu Alp represented U of G well, winning the Men’s “A” (Expert) Division and was joined on the podium by fellow teammate Anton Varabei who took the bronze. A rider known only as “Showboat” won silver for Queen’s University.

On the women’s side, Ashley Barson from Fanshawe College continued her dominance in the Women’s “A” Division, taking the gold for the day, as well as the overall championship title for that division. Erica Bota clocked in her final U-Cup race before graduating in style, and took home the silver medal. Kaitlin Mitchner who represented Humber College took the Bronze.

In the “B” Division Krisstina Mosdessy from Guelph took the gold, followed by Stephanie Belanger, also from the University of Guelph and Samantha Cassista from the University of Toronto. On the men’s side, Scott Burgess and Mark Carlson, both from Queen’s University battled hard to see who would take the gold. In the end, Burgess managed cross the finish line first. Mike McGill from U of G took home the bronze.

The day ended with a great free BBQ for all participants, where awards and prizes were handed out. The organizers of U-Cup thank Pedal Magazine for its continued support of this grassroots race series.
