UCI/MTB World Cup Grouse – 4X Report

July 11, 2003 (Grouse Mt, Vancouver, BC) – Australia's Katrina Miller (Jamis) and American Mike King (Haro/Lee Dungarees) were yesterday's winners after round four of the UCI/MTB World Cup at Grouse Mountain, Vancouver. This year the races were at the base of the mountain, allowing spectators to watch for free! Room opened up around the course to allow all the spectators to view each event in comfort.

BeOne's Bas de Bever (NED) was on hand after his fourth place finish to comment on the course. “It was a bit short, a lot of cool jumps and good turns in it. It was basically decided after three turns, which was a little bit of a bummer, but if was fun to ride and there was a good flow, nice jumps, good berms. For the area that they had to play with, they did a great job.”

Mike King was really pleased his win. “I'm glad that everything worked out my way. The focus was in qualifying, I knew that if I qualified, there was a really good chance I could pull the win off.”

The series leader Eric Carter (Mongoose/Hyundai) finished second and maintained his overall lead in the cup. Intense Cycles' Mickal Prokop was third.

In the women's event, Miller was focused and determined to pull off the win. She qualified second to Tioga's Tai-Lee Muxlow by a tenth of a second in the qualifying round, Muxlow ended up taking the silver. France's Sabrina Jonnier (Intense/Fox) was third.

Up and comer, Jill Kinter (USA, Fox Racing) was on hand after the race to answer questions. Grouse is only Kinter's second World Cup race ever and this girl is on fireSfinishing fourth in yesterday's event.

After thirteen years on the pro circuit as a BMX racer, Kinter remarked on the relatively new format of the 4X. “There's a lot more strategy, you can't go fast at full speed all the time, you got to slow it down and think about stuff.”

The weather yesterday on the mountain was just perfect, not too hot, not too cool.
