UCI Track WCup in Mexico Day 3 Report, Results – Canada’s Carleton 4th Overall in Women’s Omniun

release by the UCI
January 20, 2013 (Aguascalientes, Mexico) – The new velodrome in Aguascalientes, Mexico, proved it was a fast one on the last day of World Cup competition with 27 riders dipping under 10 seconds in the men’s sprint qualifiers.

While Kevin Sireau’s world record of 9.572 for the 200m flying start did not fall, the enthusiastic Mexican crowd were on the edge of their seats as rider after rider came close to the French athlete’s world mark established nearly four years ago.

In the end Russia’s Denis Dmitriev won the evening’s final over German Max Niederlag and in doing so took the overall World Cup sprint title. Canada’s Hugo Barrette qualified 15th while Joe Veloce was 31st. Barrette advanced to the 1/8th final and was eliminated in the B Quarterfinal.

France was the winning nation at the Mexican round of the 2012-2013 UCI Track Cycling World Cup presented by Samsung, helped in no small part by their victory in the men’s Madison. The 40km final saw Vivien Brisse and Thomas Boudat triumph over the Ukraine duo of Mykhaylo Radionov and Sergiy Lagkuti. Switzerland took the bronze medal.

Olympic silver medallist Sarah Hammer (USA) won the Omnium competition in Aguascalientes and takes the overall title in front of Olympic Champion Laura Trott (GBR). The British athlete did not compete in Mexico but won the second round in Glasgow. Canada’s Gillian Carlton won the Individual pursuits, came 2nd in 500m TT and finished 4th overall.

The Chinese women dominated the Keirin, taking all three podium spots with Tianshi Zhong (gold), Jinjie Gong (silver) and Yulei Xu (bronze). It was a perfect finish to the Mexican round of the World Cup for these Chinese sprinters after Zhong’s world record in the individual sprint qualifiers the day before and Gong’s victory in the sprint final.

Consistency in the three rounds in Cali (Colombia) Glasgow (Great Britian) and Aguascalientes means that Germany takes the overall title in the 2012-2013 UCI Track Cycling World Cup. Eyes now turn to the UCI World Championships which will take place in Minsk (Belarus) from 20th to 24th February.
