UCI Track WCup in Mexico Day 2 Report, Results – Canada’s Brown 4th in the Individual Pursuit

release by the UCI
January 19, 2013 (Aguascalientes, Mexico) – Competition had barely begun when China’s Tianshi Zhong literally flew around the new velodrome in Aguascalientes to set a new world record in the women’s Sprint. Her time of 10.573 for the 200 metres flying start, still to be ratified, lowers the previous record of 10.643 set by Germany’s Miriam Welte in June last year.

The atmosphere was set for the 2nd day of competition at the Mexican round of the UCI Track Cycling World Cup presented by Samsung. Zhong finally finished 5th in the evening’s final, which was won by her compatriot Jinjie Gong, a trainee at the World Cycling Centre in Aigle.

The women’s racing continued to provide plenty of emotion, with Poland’s Katarzyna Pawlowska taking her second gold medal of the competition: her win in the individual pursuit followed her victory in the points race the day before. Pawlowska also claims the overall World Cup title in the two disciplines. Canada’s Laura Brown qualified 4th and ended up 4th overall.

The last day of the men’s Omnium saw the competitors race the individual pursuit, 15km scratch race and the kilometre time trial. Victorious in the pursuit, Russia’s Artur Ershov won the Omnium ahead of Vivien Brisse (FRA) and the Czech Republic’s Ondrej Rybin, who took honours in the time trial event. Sixth in the Omnium in Aguascalientes, Switzerland’s Loic Perizzolo takes the overall World Cup honours. Canada’s Remi Pelletier-Roy finished 17th overall in Mexico.

The final race of the evening was the men’s Keirin, won by Dutch athlete Matthijs Buchli, who also wins the World Cup title ahead of Germany’s Stefan Boetticher, victorious in Glasgow, and the Colombian Fabian Puerta, who won the opening round in front of his home crowd in Cali, Colombia.

The third and final day of competition in Aguascalientes will feature the final of the men’s Madison, men’s sprint, women’s Omnium and women’s Keirin.
