UCI Track WCup in Mexico Day 1 Report, Results – Canada Wins Women’s Team Pursuit GOLD

by the UCI/pedalmag.com

January 18, 2013 (Aguascalientes, Mexico) – The first UCI Track Cycling World Cup Champions of the season were crowned last night on the opening evening of competition in Aguascalientes, Mexico with Canada’s Women’s Team Pursuit squad scoring the win, courtesy of Gillian Carleton, Jasmin Glaesser, and Steph Roorda.

The final of three rounds of the 2012-2013 UCI Track Cycling World Cup presented by Samsung got underway on Thursday in the city’s newly-constructed velodrome.

The first final of the evening was the women’s team pursuit, in which Olympic bronze medallists, Canada, took honours in front of the Ukraine. Absent from the first two rounds in Cali (COL) and Glasgow (GBR), Canada, with just one change within its team since the Olympics, finishes fourth in the overall World Cup standings. Fourth in Aguascalientes, Italy takes overall World Cup honours.

In a Facebook post, Canadian team member Laura Brown recounted that she was about to start the gold medal round with Glaesser and Carleton, when it suddenly became evident that the team had failed to register her in the final and Roorda, who was registered, had to hurry to the start at the last moment.

In the men’s team pursuit, Russia gave a convincing demonstration to beat Switzerland in the final, but finishes second behind the Swiss in the overall standings.

Oceania dominated the team sprint events in Aguascalientes, with Australia taking gold in the women’s event and New Zealand victorious in the men’s team sprint. The British women’s sprint team was absent in Mexico but nevertheless takes World Cup honours after its victories in Cali and Glasgow. Also victorious in the first two rounds, the reigning World Cup winners in the men’s team sprint, Germany, again take overall honours despite a distant 5th place in Aguascalientes.

The evening’s competition closed with the women’s points race, which saw Poland’s Katarzyna Pawlowska take honours in front of the Czech Republic’s Jamila Machacova and the Cuban Massague Dominguez.

The evening’s competition closed with the women’s points race, which saw Poland’s Katarzyna Pawlowska [who signed with Montreal-based GSD gestion/Kallisto/Specialized in 2013] take honours in front of the Czech Republic’s Jamila Machacova and the Cuban Massague Dominguez.

Racing continues on Friday with the finals of the women’s individual pursuit and individual sprint, and the men’s omnium and Keirin.
