May 10, 2013 – In the latest development in the Operacion Puerto scandal, the UCI has announced in a statement that it will appeal Spanish Judge Julia Patricia Santamaria decision to “…not to release to the UCI and other anti-doping organisations the more than 200 bags of blood and other evidence gathered in police raids in 2006, which were presented in the trial of Spanish doctor Eufemiano Fuentes.” Judge Santamaria recently saw found doctor Eufemiano Fuentes guilty of endangering public health, barred him from medical practice in sports for four years and ordered him to pay a fine. The judge also ordered evidence to be destroyed once appeals are heard.
On learning of the ruling to deny further use of the evidence, Spanish sports journalist Fernando Miñana started a petition to influence the Spanish court to reverse decision. Read more about it in Pedal‘s coverage HERE.
