September 23, 2014 (Ponferrada, Spain) – German sensation Lennard Kamna is following in the footsteps of his countryman, Tony Martin, evaporating the field wherever he races in pressure situations, and today he showed his prowess again winning the Junior Men’s 29.5km ITT.

As the 2014 National and European ITT Champion Kamna secured the gold again today, beating out American ITT National champion Adrien Costa by 44.66 seconds (the only other rider to break the 37-minute mark) with a blistering time of 36:13.49 at the finish line today under much drier conditions than yesterday’s deluge. Australia continued to collect medals here with Michael Stoker (AUS) at 37:11.60 taking home the bronze in the 29.5 ITT course.

The lone Canadian (first time) Junior, Pier-Andre Cote, National ITT Junior Champion, came in 47th, though his first split at 24th overall (14:59.60) looked promising, he faded by the second split ending up 47th overall. While he as disappointed with his race, hoping for better, Cote showed maturity in his perspective.

“There are so few pressure races I had this year compared to this, that the build up to this race actually was much harder to deal with than the actual race. I’m disappointed in my race as I wanted to break top 10, but I still feel ok and will use the experience for my future, building momentum in how to deal with pressure situations. It’s my first time at the Road Worlds…I’ve got a lot to learn and lots of time to do it.”

Kamna, who started last – which wasn’t an advantage yesterday with the rain – allowed Costa to enjoy the hotseat until he turned on the rockets early, averaging 48.461 km/hr overall, leading at each split, casting out any doubt he would vanquish the field.

“I knew on the hill that I was in the lead and had great legs, so I turned on the jets. They say my cadence is more like (Tony) Martin’s, slower with power – that’s fine – it works for me.”
