UCI Nations-Cup Saguenay Stage 1 Report, Full Results – Lander Wins, Houle 3rd

report by the Coupe des Nations

June 3, 2010 (Saguenay, Quebec) – Danish rider Sebastian Lander won the mass sprint at the end of the 140.7km first stage of the Coupe des Nations U23-Ville de Saguenay. The stage was covered at a fast average speed of 45.57km/h. Despite numerous attempts, no breakaways could gain more than 30 seconds over the active field on a flat circuit.

The 19-year-old Scandinavian rider was pleased with the outcome of the day. “With 50km to go, my team mates asked me to get ready for the mass sprint so I started to save myself, and they helped me into position perfectly with 500 metres to go. I am glad I can thank them with this win.” Lander also claimed the yellow overall leader jersey that he will wear on Friday. Thanks to the time bonuses, he now has a 4-second lead over Germany’s Phillip Ries, 2nd on the stage, and six seconds over Canadian Hugo Houle who was 3rd on the day.

Houle was please with his 3rd place “I am happy with how things unfolded for me. This is my best result so far at this level.” The Ste-Perpetue (Quebec) native was even more so happy with the Canadian National team solidarity “The team was awesome, and they really helped me in the end. In particular, David Boily was instrumental in getting me to the front in the last kilometre so that I could launch my sprint at the ideal moment. It looks good for the upcoming stages.”

Tommorow’s stage is 148.4km over a 21.2km circuit following the spectacular countryside of La Baie. The short steep hills will surely be a challenge for the riders.
