by pedalmag.com

September 19, 2009 (Schladming, Austria) – The Elite/U23 women’s race will soon be underway with warm and sunny conditions for the final round in the series. There are 72 riders lined up at the start and Canada has 7 competitors in the mix lead by Catharine Pendrel (Luna) and Marie-Helene Premont with Emily Batty the top U23 rider – the women will race 4 laps and they’re off.

Lap 1
World cup leader Elisabeth Osl (Aut) Central Ghost Pro Team is at the front with Canada’s Premont. Osl is now leading with Premont in second and Pendrel in 3rd. Lyne Byberg (Nor) Specialized Factory Team is leading a chase group behind including Irina Kalentieva (Rus) Topeak Ergon.

Lap 2
As they come thru to start for the second lap it’s Osl in first with Pendrel now in second at 5 sec. followed by Premont in 3rd at 7 sec. In fourth it’s Cecile Rode Ravanel (Fra) Lapierre then Poland’s Anna Szafraniec (JBG-2 Professional MTB Team) is 5th followed by Byberg in 6th.

Top U23 rider is Aleksandra Dawidowicz (Pol) CCC Polkowice in 8th at 45 sec – Canada’s Batty is in 2nd in the high teens or 20s – we missed her time coming thru. Rebecca Beaumont is in 52nd at 4:32 and Jean Ann McKirdy is in 62nd at 5:09.

At the 1/2 way mark it’s still Osl, Pendrel, Permont. As they’re about to end the 2nd lap Osl has extended her lead to 15 sec over Pendrel in second while Premont is now with the chase group behind.

Lap 3
Osl is now on lap 3 with a time of 38:43 with Canada’s Pendrel in 2nd at 31s followed by Byberg in 3rd at 1:02 and then it’s Premont in 4th at 1:04. Just behind her is Szafraniec in 5th then it’s Kalentieva in 6th with Dawidowicz still the top U23 rider in 7th at 1:43.

Batty is now 3rd in the U23 race in 27th overall at 4:41 followed by Amanda Sin in 29th at 5:01. Sandra Walter is in 36th at 6:06, McKirdy is now in 61st at 9:58 followed by Beaumont in 62nd at 10:23.

The leaders are over the 1/2 way point but Kalentieva looks like she can’t hold the pace…

Lap 4 Final
It’s Osl still leading with a time of 58:42 starting the final lap with Canada’s Pendrel in 2nd at 1:11. Another 24s back it’s Norway’s Byberg in 3rd at 1:35 with Szafraniec taking over 4th at 1:38 followed by Premont in 5th at 1:44.

Kalentieva is off the leaders at 2:21 in 6th and Dawidowicz continues her U23 lead in 7th overall at 2:35. USA’s Lea Davidson (Team Maxxis-Rocky Mountain Bicycles) is 13th with fellow American Mary McConneloug in 14th.

Osl’s in charge as Byberg is gaining on Pendrel… Osl takes it and wins the series overall for the 2009 season. Pendrel placed 3rd overall in the final standings.
