UCI MTB World Cup MSA XC Elite Women – Updates, Full Results, Overall, Photos

by pedalmag.com

July 26, 2009 (Mont Sainte-Anne, QC) – The rain has been falling steadily for the past 15 minutes – not hard but steady – as the Elite women’s XC race will soon be underway with 76 starters and 14 Canadians racing. Top Canucks include 2009 XC national champ Catharine Pendrel (NB) Luna Pro and Marie-Helene Premont (Maxxis-Rocky Mountain) while Margarita Fullana (Esp) Massi, Elisabeth Osl (Aut) Ghost and Lyne Byberg (Nor) Specialized are some of the top Euros here. The women will complete 4 laps.

As mentioned in our Junior XC race updates earlier today here a longer, but less difficult, route through the new technical downhill rocky section was added by organizers at the UCI’s request, because of the potential danger in wet conditions – which is the case today.

Lap 1
Fullana and USA’s Willow Koerber (Subaru-Gary Fisher) jump to the front as the race is underway. Premont and the pack are just behind.

At the end of the start section it’s Premont leading by 5-sec followed closely by Fullana and Irina Kalentieva (Rus) Topeak with the pack strung out behind.

Pendrel has attacked and has taken over the lead with Premont in second, Koerber is in 3rd, Kalentieva is in 4th, and Katarina Nash (Cze) Luna Pro is in 5th as the riders are almost finished the first lap. Emily Batty (Can) Trek Store is in 16th.

Lap 2
Pendrel with Kalentieva on her wheel is out front and they have a 10-sec lead on Koerber in 3rd with Nash now in 4th. The rain eased off during Lap 1 but has returned.

Lap 3
Pendrel is now on her 3rd lap with and 8-second lead on Kalentieva. Pendrel’s team mate Nash has now taken over 3rd another 10 seconds back with Koerber in 4th at 2 more sec. In 5th is Osl at 1:16 with Maja Wloszczowska (Pol) in 6th, Georgia Gould (USA) is in 7th, Compton is 8th, Byberg is 9th and Premont is 10th.

Apparently Premont flatted but was able to recover quickly and now she’s moved up to 9th place. Halfway thru the lap positions are holding – Premont was back in the tech zone with a rear wheel problem. Batty is 16th, Mical Dyck is 20th, Amanda Sin is 30th, Sandra Walter is 38th.

Lap 4 Final
Canada’s Pendrel is on fire and looks comfortable in the lead – her time is 1:12:15 as she begins the final lap. She finally has the XC National title and is not slowing down (for too long) to smell the roses.

Nash is now in second at 40 seconds with Kalentieva dropping to 3rd at 1:02. Koerber is 4th at 1:12, Byberg is 5th at 1:55, 6th is Osl, 7th is Wloszczowska at 2:21… Gould is 8th, Aleksandra Dawidowicz is 9th and Compton is 10th at 3:25. Canada’s Premont is 11th at 3:42.

Kalentieva has attacked and at the half way point of the final lap she’s taken back 2nd place but Nash is on her wheel as the two are battling for second and third.
