February 8, 2007 – Retired pro cyclists could soon benefit from a golden handshake from the UCI which is considering to pay cycling retirees 20,000 Swiss francs ($19,000 CDN) to help them launch a second career, according to Sports.be. The proposed program for cyclists aged 30 and over would be subject to certain conditions. Among these, cyclists will need to have ridden at least 30 days a year for five years with a UCI ProTeam or with a professional continental team. The source of funds would be the 5% of prize money winnings that the UCI has been collecting since 2002.
