release by the UCI

September 24, 2009 (Lugano, Switzerland) – The Management Committee of the International Cycling Union (UCI) met today in Lugano during the UCI Road World Championships being held in Mendrisio (Switzerland). The Management Committee awarded the following UCI World Championships at this meeting:

– 2012 Road: Limburg Region (the Netherlands)
– 2011 BMX: Copenhagen (Denmark)
– 2011 Para-cycling (Road): Roskilde (Denmark)
– 2010 Masters Cyclo-cross: Mol (Belgium)

The Management Committee also approved the following calendars:
– 2010 Road International Calendar;
– 2010-2011 UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup (provisional calendar);
– 2010 UCI Mountain Bike International Calendar;
– 2010 UCI Cycling for All International Calendar;
– 2010 UCI Indoor Cycling International Calendar;
– 2010 UCI Para-cycling International Calendar.

These calendars will all soon be published on the UCI website (www.uci.ch).

The members of the UCI Management Committee approved the appointment of two team representatives to the UCI ProTour Council at that body’s meeting yesterday in Lugano. These representatives are Mr Roberto Amadio and Mr Jonathan Vaughters, managers of the Liquigas (ITA) and Garmin-Slipstream (USA) teams respectively. Mr Vaughters is also the President of the AIGCP (International Association of Professional Cycling Teams).

After a thorough discussion of the subject of the use of two-way radio in races, the Management Committee decided to accept the UCI Road Commission’s recommendation to gradually phase out the use of two-way radio for all categories of rider. The members were of the opinion that two-way radio distorts the nature of cycle sport. They also took into account the desire expressed by the majority of those involved in cycling to prohibit the equipment. A ban on two-way radio is already in place for the Junior and Under-23 categories. It was agreed that a calendar for implementation of this measure would be drawn up.

The Management Committee also decided to abandon the classification of UCI Professional Continental Teams participating in the biological passport programme as it had not stimulated the anticipated interest.
Finally, the Anti-Doping Rules were modified to include a new section dedicated to the UCI’s anti-doping education programme. Riders in the target group subject to UCI testing will be obliged to follow this programme. The National Federations will also be strongly encouraged to ask riders and team members to follow the programme.
