June 26, 2007 – The UCI Management Committee, meeting yesterday and today in Cape Town, South Africa, alongside the B World Championships, congratulated President Pat McQuaid on the recent initiatives against doping.
The Management Committee members gave their unconditional support to the “Riders’ commitment to a new cycling,” launched on June 19 in Geneva.
The Management Committee believes that the success of this action, which has already been endorsed by a considerable number of UCI ProTour team riders, represents an extremely strong signal from a Federation that has positioned itself once again in the forefront of the anti-doping fight. The Management Committee was pleased to learn that further measures will soon be introduced to extend the commitment to team staff.
The Management Committee was then invited to address the matter of the governance of professional cycling, an issue raised by representatives of ASO, RCS and Unipublic during discussions that followed the agreement signed on 5 March in Brussels between the UCI, organisers and the IPCT.
The position of the Management Committee members was unanimous and unequivocal: negotiations with these organisations must continue, with a view to defining a long-term solution in the interests of the sport. Nevertheless, the institutional role of the UCI, whose responsibility for managing cycling at world level is recognised by the International Olympic Committee and all other political and sporting bodies, must in no case be jeopardised.
The UCI Management Committee welcomed the new sponsorship contracts with Nissan, Swatch and Safety Jogger, for the Mountain Bike, BMX and cyclo-cross World Cups respectively. The 2008 calendar for the Nissan UCI Mountain Bike World Cup presented by Shimano was also approved. The calendar can be consulted on the UCI website: www.uci.ch.
Finally, the Management Committee selected Dornbirn in Austria to host the 2008 UCI Indoor Cycling World Championships.
