April 29, 2012 (Guatemala City, Guatemala) – It was a silver medal day for Canada’s Audrey Labrie in the women’s 64km road race on the final day of of the UCI Junior Pan-Am Road Championships adding to the Canadian team’s overall medal haul.
Two days ago the team’s track contingent rose to the challenge on the final day of racing in Guatemala City scoring four medals. With yesterday’s TT bronze and today’s road race silver the final medal count for Team Canada during the 2012 Junior Pan Am Championships in Guatemala totals 10.
Aiden Caves, mounted a charge in the Men’s Omnium on Friday and won the bronze medal leaping over four competitors after a disappointing first day. The final three events were outstanding and Caves was very happy with his performance.
Kinley Gibson, continued her strong racing and took home another medal (bronze) after the sixe events of the women’s Omnium.
Sarah Mason, attacked during the Scratch race and with two other nations lapped the field on her way to a silver medal.
The final track event on Friday was the women’s Keirin. It was like a marathon with three restarts, two DQ’s (Sarah Mason) (Columbia), one protest (Columbia), and a team (Columbia) withdrawing from the event…oh, by the way Audrey Labrie, scored a well deserved Bronze.
Saturday was the men’s and women’s TT and Kinley Gibson had the ride of her life stopping the clock with the third quickest time and took home the bronze medal.
This morning in the 64km women’s road race a young lady from Mexico won by four minutes. In the group sprint to the finish, Labrie, who was well positioned all day sprinted for the line and took home the silver medal by two bike lengths.
In the men’s 104km road race Canada’s top performer was Will Simonds (London, ON) who finished the race 13 minutes down on the winner who was from Mexico. A gutsy effort for the young first year Junior.
The Canadian Team will have an authentic feast of foods from around Guatemala, This will be a fine ending to an outstanding Project (learning experience) for our young Canadian athletes.
