July 6, 2008 (Kingston, ON) – Under hot & sunny skies, Kingston hosted a UCI points race again this year. The competition was fierce among Canada’s best and featured the best Junior men & women in attendance at a Canadian race in years – a testament to the growth of BMX and the amazing development of our talented younger riders.
In Elite men’s action, National BMX Champion Scott Erwood (BC) and Jim Brown (AB) battled it out in motos. Although Brown had the best gate all day, it was Erwood’s sheer power that got him to the front of the pack and across the line first. These two will race next week on the Olympic replica track in San Diego, CA in a ride-off for the one Olympic berth that Canada earned at the 2008 BMX World Championships. Both are in top form and it will be anyone’s race.
The Elite women saw National Champion Christine Miller win her motos, but in the main, Kaila Sweeney pimped Miller off the track down the first straight, and Miller was unable to make up for lost time.
The Junior men’s race was the most exciting competition in recent years with the likes of World #3 Tory Nyhaug, Alex Sailer, Steve Creighton and Nick Benetti doing battle all day. Nyhaug’s finesse and sheer skill won him the top spot, leaving Sailer, Creighton and Benetti to duke it out for the remaining spots.
The Junior women’s motos were dominated by Abby Graalman swapping spots with Amelia Walsh, Sarah Biron and National Champ Brooklyn Wilkinson. It was anyone’s race in the qualifiers until Wilkinson stepped it up for the main by breaking away from the pack & taking the win.
