U of T MTB Team Wins Award

April 6, 2004 – On April 2, the University of Toronto Mountain Bike Team was chosen from the school's 44 varsity teams to receive the university's “Outstanding contribution to Sport, Community and Volunteerism Award” at U of T's Varsity athletic awards banquet held at the former Colony Hotel. This prestigious award is given each year to a team that not only competes at a high level, but in representing the university goes above and beyond while giving back to their sport and community. Team Captain Antonia Gawel, who was also nominated for U of T's female athlete of the year, accepted the award on behalf of the team.

The team was recognized for a long list of accomplishments including establishing a student athlete coaching certification program where the team's alumni contribute to have team leaders become certified mountain bike coaches. The team was also recognized for its environmental commitment and the annual Toronto Don Valley bike trail clean-up event they have organized for the past six years. To date, team members have volunteered their time and have removed over 2,000 pounds of trash from the forest floor.
