April 22, 2010 (Trinidad) – There are currently four Canadians competing at the Beacon Festival in Trinidad, Daniele Defranceschi, Jean-Michel Lachance, Adam Thuss, and Stephane Cossette. The racing on Aprill 17th was at Skinner Park and saw Stephane ride to a second place in the 500m sprint. In the 8-lap Scratch race, he rode to a 3rd place finish and his second podium of the day. The sprinter enjoyed the race atmosphere, “there was reggae music playing, the crowds were large and the ambience was very festive.”
On the Endurance side, Jean-Michael Lachance rode to a 4th place in the Miss&Out, and in the 12-lap scratch Daniele rode to a 5th. Adam Thuss rode for the team all day long to get them in to position. In the final 20km Scratch, Canada was present in every break in the race, and rode impressively, but It was Franco Marvulli who got away with five laps to go, and the Canadians could not bring him back.
April 18th the racing was at the Arima Velodrome, a long 500m Track. Stephane qualified 2nd behind Roberto Chiappa from Italy, but finished 4th in the Sprint tournament. “I am content with my ride but would have liked to have been on the podium,” said Cossette. In the 1,500m scratch it was Adam and Daniele getting Jean Michael into position to get the first podium for the endurance riders. The final event, a 25km Scratch race, saw the Canadians present in every move, but it was the Europeans and Argentinians who controlled the pace of the race. Unlike the first day, when Franco Marvulli look off with 4 km to go and jumped out to a 15sec lead over the field, Adam and Daniele went to the front and brought the gap back to about four seconds, when we were finished, Jean Michael jumped across the small gap and caught Franco Marvulli, but Again it was Marvulli winning the race, but Jean Micheal finished 2nd in the feature event.
Daniele Defranceschi commented that, “After two days of track racing, the people in Trinidad are saying this is the best they have seen Canadians ride in Trinidad since the days of Joceyln Lovell and Gord Singleton. A very nice complement.”
