June 23, 2010 – In the first few months since the start of the 2010 race season in March, the Trek Red Truck Racing team presented by Mosaic Homes has lived up to its preseason billing as one of the premier teams in Canada by factoring prominently in all races entered and dominating the podium. The team capped off its final preseason preparation with its second annual training camp in Santa Rosa, California held in late March. The hard work and training through the winter months has already paid dividends for the team with impressive results achieved in the first half of the race season.
The team opened up its race campaign in Walla Walla, WA with Nick Hamilton winning the overall in the annual weekend stage race. Next up was the Race the Ridge stage race held in Maple Ridge, BC where the men dominated the event by taking 3 out of the top 5 overall placing’s and Matt Bell securing the overall victory. The women’s team powered their way through 10 laps of a challenging course with 2 short but steep climbs in Surrey, BC by finishing first and third in the Campbell Heights road race with Matt Bell taking third in the men’s race.
The Provincial Road Race Championships were held on May 29th in Sooke, BC as the first of five BC Cup races in the series. Nick Hamilton broke away with 2 other riders in the rain and narrowly missed donning the jersey by finishing second in a strong field of riders. Victory for the team came less than 24 hrs later as team sprinting ace Tyler Trace took the field sprint to win the Bastion Square Criterium in downtown Victoria and Noe Cooper rode a strong race to finish 5th in the women’s race. The following week, the team travelled south for the Mt. Hood Classic featuring some of the top US Pro teams and a heavy dose of climbing stages. In the opening circuit race, Tyler Trace again showed his sprinting prowess with an impressive third place podium finish. The next day Nick Hamilton powered a long breakaway and managed to hold off the fast charging peleton to notch the biggest win of his promising young career.
On June 6th, The Westside Cycling Classic and second installment of the BC Cup Series was held on Vancouver’s Westside and all categories of racers competed on a 10km course surrounding the Pacific Spirit Regional Park and featuring a difficult climb of an average of 6 percent grade on rough pavement. Once again Trek Red Truck racers featured prominently with Tyler Trace winning the pro 1 / 2 men’s race, Leah Kirchmann winning the pro 1 / 2 women’s race and James Neil taking 3rd in the Master/Junior men’s race.
After 2 BC Cup races, Trek Red Truck racers Leah Kirchmann leads the women’s standings and Tyler Trace sits in second place in the men’s with 3 events remaining. Canada’s most notable International stage race, the week-long Tour de Beauce held annually in rural Quebec got underway this week featuring Nick Hamilton, Matt Bell, and former team member Jamie Sparling selected to ride for Canada.
Looking forward, the rest of the team will travel east to Alberta this week for the Banff National Park Bike Fest on June 17-20 and featuring 5 challenging stages then on to the National Road Championships held in Edmonton on June 25-27 then return for the start of BC Super Week at the Tour de Delta. The team and its sponsors will again play host for the Yaletown Grand Prix held as always on July 1st (Canada Day) in front of thousands of spectators in downtown Vancouver.
