March 15, 2003 – A tragic incident occurred in the Stage 2 of the 18th Annual Tucson Bicycle Classic. A rider lost his life in an incident during the race. The Tucson Bicycle Classic staff, riders volunteer and sponsors are deeply saddened by this tragedy and wish to extend sincere condolences to the family, teammates and friends of our fellow racer.

The staff carefully considered whether and how to proceed with Sunday's stage 3 race and have decided to continue the race with several changes:

First, in tribute to our lost rider, each race will be shortened one lap. In addition, each race will start with a moment of silence and one memorial lap dedicated to him. Starting times for each category remain the same.

This is the worst possible thing that can happen in any sport. It is very important to us to acknowledge the loss and to honor the life of this young man.
