April 04, 2012 (Melbourne, Australia) – The UCI World Track Cycling Championships are underway in Melbourne, Australia and Day 1 of the event featured the Men’s Team Sprint where the Canadian squad of Hugo Barrette, Travis Smith, and Joseph Veloce finished 11th in qualification and did not advance to the final.

France placed first in qualification, beating the Australian home team, however, it was the Aussie trio of Matthew Glaetzer, Shane Perkins, and Scott Sunderland that took home the rainbow stripes in the final, with the French team forced to settle for silver.

With the USA team relegated, Venuzuala in 8th, and Canada in 11th the jury is still out on whether the Canucks will miss out on Olympic selection.

In the Women’s Team Sprint, Germany’s Miriam Welte and Kristina Vogel edged out Australia’s Anna Meares and Kaarle McCulloch for gold in the final, while track cycling powerhouses Britain and Australia went head-to-head in the Men’s Team Pursuit. Britain was unstoppable, winning the qualification as well as the final and setting a new world record in the process. Adding another gold to the British team’s take so far was Ben Swift, who won the Men’s Scratch Race.
