August 3, 2003 (Stuttgart, Germany) – The final day of competition at the Track Worlds 2003 in Stuttgart, Germany was once again filled with unexpected thrilling performances that had the crowd on the edge of their seats.

In the women's match sprint Svetlana Grankovskaya of Russia surprised everyone, not to mention her opponent Natallia Tslinskaya of Belarus (last year's sprint winner), by beating Tslinskaya in two straight matches. After the first sprint, which Grankovskaya took by just a millimeter, Tslinskaya rode around for a lap looking at her opponent in astonishment – she had underestimated her. It also appeared that the fans also underestimated Grankovskaya because comments such as, “Good ride for the Russian, but Tslinskaya will win the next two straight,” were heard coming from the stands. However, it was Grankovskaya who took the win and takes home the Rainbow Jersey!

In the Madison, Canadian Quebec riders Martin Gilbert and Alex Cloutier gave everything they had but came up three laps short and were eliminated with a third of the race to go. It was a fast competition in which the 52 km were covered in 56 minutes with nine intermediate sprints. The sprints were highly contested but in the end it was distance that won. Only three teams were able to gain a lap on the field. The Swiss team and the Argentinian team worked together to gain a lap halfway through the race but it was the impressive and successful solo effort by the New Zealand team, with only a quarter of the race left, that had everyone cheering. These three teams battled it out for the top three spots but it was the Swiss that eventually took gold.

The Olympic Sprint was the last event of the competition and in front of a home crowd the German team sprinted over the three laps to take gold. It had everyone on their feet and was a great way to end the 2003 Track World Championships.
