May 6, 2007 (Silver City, New Mexico) – Health Net’s Nathan O’Neill successfully defended his leader’s jersey over the more than 9,000 feet of climbing that riders faced on the final stage of the Tour of the Gila. The race was won by the ageless Scott Moniger (BMC), who is now into his 16th season in the professional ranks. Canadian Ryder Hesjedal (Health Net) rode an impressive race in aid of his Australian teammate before finishing 13th on the stage.

Marissa Asplund of Team Tibco (the team managed by former Canadian Olympian Linda Jackson) took her first major professional victory in impressive style, soloing to a near two-minute margin ahead of Amber Rais of the powerful Webcor team. Rais’ teammate Mara Abbot finished 6th on the stage, enough to take the overall victory and add to her impressive 2007 season victory tally.

Leigh Hobson (Cheerwine) was the top Canadian on the day, just ahead of veteran Anne Samplonius (Expesscopy.com) who was the top Canuck overall in 6th, while Symmetrics rider Leah Goldstein was 15th on the stage and remained in the top ten overall.
