May 5, 2007 (Silver City, New Mexico) — Jelly Belly sprinter Brice Jones took the Stage 4 criterium win at Tour of the Gila ahead of last year’s Australian criterium champion Richard England (Priority Health). The race was contested on a four-corner circuit with a short but hard climb on the backside. While a bunch finish guaranteed that there were no changes on the GC, Canada’s Ryder Hesjedal (Health Net p/b Maxxis) finished an impressive 6th on the stage.

In the women’s race a five-rider break put nearly a minute into the field. With most of the big teams represented but no GC threats it was Jill McLaughlin (Touchstone Climbing) out kicking Helen Kelly of Webcor for the win, making Kelly the second Australian to be runner up on the day.

Canadian National Champion Alex Wrubleski (Colivita/Sutter Home) matched Hesjedal’s performance by winning the bunch sprint for 6th, with Gina Grain (Expresscopy.com) in 8th and Symmetrics rider Marni Hambleton in 10th.

Sunday’s race is likely to be the decisive day for the General Classification as the riders face the infamous Gila Monster stage, an epic route that suites the climbers.
