May 3, 2007 (Silver City, New Mexico) — Australian champion Nathan O’Neill (Health Net) showcased his devastating time trail prowess winning the 25.84km (16.15 mile) opening time trial at the 21st annual Tour of the Gila, May 2-6, in New Mexico.

The powerful Aussie put more than a minute into his nearest rival, Ben Jacques-Maynes (Priority Health) who kept his own string of trime trial results going.

Canadian Ryder Hesjedal (Health Net) finished a strong 6th place, poising him to showcase his excellent climbing abilities in the coming mountain stages.

Also present were former Canadian National Champion Francois Parisian (Slipstream) and the Spin-12 team of young Canadian Espoirs riding in their NRC debut as a team.

British rider Rachel Heal rode the fastest time in the women’s race, edging out Dotsie Bausch (Colivita/Sutter Home) and Redlands winner Mara Abbott (Webcor).

Ann Samplonious (Expresscopy.com) led the Canadians in the results in 5th place, with Leigh Hobson of Cheerwine in 7th. These two riders sandwiched Symmetrics strong-woman Leah Goldstein of Israel in 6th, who competed for Canada prior to changing her citizenship before the 2004 Olympics.
