Tour of Missouri Stage 5 Full Results – Zabriskie Wins and Leads, Veilleux Interview

by Betsy Baker

September 11, 2009 (Sedalia, MO) – David Zabriskie (USA) Garmin-Slipstream took over the race leader’s jersey with his win on Stage 5 at the 30.6km Sedalia Time Trial with Gustav Larsson (Swe) Team Saxo Bank in second and Tom Zirbel (USA) Bissell Pro Cycling in 3rd. Top Canadian was Michael Barry (Columbia-HTC) in 23rd also leading the charge on GC in 23rd as well.

Interview with David Veilleux (KBS)
We caught up with Canada’s David Veilleux of Kelly Benefit Strategies at the Tour of Missouri, who took a minutes to talk with Pedal prior to the start of yesterday’s stage.

How do you think your race is going thus far?
DV: The first stages were pretty controlled. For us the first and second stages were designated for Alex Candelario (Veilleux’s teammate) and then the next was mine. It has gone pretty well so far. I am just hoping that when they really start racing I will be there in the front group.

With Cavendish out, Columbia-HTC really doesn’t have a reason to control the front of the race – should open up things up quite a bit?
DV: I think it is a major factor for the stage today. We were not planning on that but with the change we’ve had to shuffle our plans as have most of the teams.

Do you like the course here so far?
DV: Yeah, it is nice, rolling but kind of difficult. If the race was really going hard, it would be difficult. If the big Pro Tour guys start attacking, it will be really hard.

As a Canadian how do you feel to see an all-Canadian team [Planet Energy] competing here?
DV: The guys are doing a good job and it is good to see this young team doing well.

Canada is also producing many solid strong riders with some on Pro Tour teams.
DV: We have many strong riders in Canada. We just need to find them. I think that because of the weather, it’s more difficult to get people into cycling. Currently there are four Canadians riding at the Vuelta, there’s the Cervelo Test Team, and there will be two Canadian Pro Tour races next year in September in Montreal and Quebec City. This is a major step for us and I’m hoping that the sport will continue to grow.

Is this the end of your season?
DV: No. Next weekend I am riding in Normandy (France) and then at the Road World Championships in Switzerland.

Was there any particular person that inspired you to start racing?
DV: No, just myself. I never really had a big idol or someone I wanted to be like. I just started mountain biking.

Do you do a lot of mountain biking in the off season?
DV: Yes, I do some MTB riding in October and November until the snow comes.

Any interest in cyclocross?
DV: No. When this season ends, I will be going back to school and studying with no time available for that.

What are you studying?
DV: Mechanical Engineering.

Best of luck today in the race. Thank you for taking the time to chat.
DV: See you at the finish.

I wasn’t able to catch up with Veilleux at the finish on Stage 4 but he had a solid race coming in at 4:07 behind stage winner JJ Haedo of Saxo Bank, crossing the line in 38th place.
