May 20, 2012 (Los Angeles, CA) – Optum Pro Cycling presented by Kelly Benefit Strategies closed out their major goal for the week today, delivering Sebastian Salas home with the Nissan King of the Mountains jersey after an incredibly face paced circuit race running from Beverly Hills to L.A. Live. Ken Hanson was the top domestic finisher in a frantic field sprint, claiming seventh place to cap off the week.
There were no more points available in the climbing competition – all Salas had to do was cruise across the line safely to win the prize, which on the flattest road the riders have seen all week, was a relatively easy task for the powerful young rider.
“It is an amazing feeling to bring home the jersey that this team has battled for so hard all week,” said Salas after the race. “I don’t think it has quite sunk it yet. Maybe once I can get some rest and recovery I will be able to enjoy the victory a bit more, but right now I am just ready for some sleep.”
With Salas’ polka dot jersey secured, the Optum p/b KBS team was not satisfied to sit on it’s haunches on the incredible Los Angeles course, and Performance Director Jonas Carney instructed the team to be as aggressive as possible in the hunt for a stage win.
“This was a pretty incredible course today on some roads we would rarely get to ride otherwise, and it was fun to see our guys being so aggressive,” said Carney. “We were certain this would end in a field sprint, and our plan was to set up Ken Hanson. Ken has suffered through a brutal week of climbing and it was time for him to get a shot at a sprint.”
Scott Zwizanski was aggressive all day in the breakaway
Despite the near inevitability of a field sprint, Mike Creed launching an immediate attack and Scott Zwizanski followed a quick counter attack with several other riders that established a gap as the peloton raced down Sunset Boulevard and through Chinatown into the five lap circuit in the heart of downtown L.A.
Nathan Hoss (Garmin-Barracuda) launched out of the breakaway in an attempt to solo the race, and Zwizanski followed, with Team UnitedHealthCare’s Rory Sutherland on his wheel. A small gap was established but the peloton would not be denied, and the stage was set for the sprint.
Candelario and Hanson entered the final three turns in good position. With just 2 kilometers to go, Hanson was pinched off in a tight corner, but battled back onto his teammates wheel.
“Cando did an awesome job sheltering me today through a really chaotic finish,” said Hanson. “We entered the final straight in pretty good position and I launched off his wheel, but with only so much horsepower left it was hard for us to move past the big lead out trains and I couldn’t quite close the gap. It’s a finish I will be replaying in my head for a long time, but it just motivates me that much more for the next sprint.”
The team leaves the Amgen Tour California with the Nissan King of the Mountains jersey and three top eight finishes, including Candelario’s 4th place in stage three.
Canadian Sebastien Salas Wins KOM jersey at the 2012 Amgen Tour of California
KOM Jersey awarded to Best climber; Salas becomes 2nd Canadian to ever win a jersey in California
The Canadian Cycling Association would like to congratulate road cyclist Sebastien Salas of Team Optum-Kelly Benefit for winning the King of the Mountain jersey at the 2012 Amgen Tour of California.
From the first stage, Salas fought a tough battle with another Canadian, David Boily of Team SpiderTech. Boily took the jersey for first two stages. Salas went on the attack in the third stage, and took control of the KOM race. Since then, Salas has been wearing the coveted Polka-Dot jersey, a highly respected jersey awarded to the best climber.
Only one other Canadian won a jersey at the Amgen Tour of California – Dominique Rollin (FDJ-Big Mat) won the best sprinter jersey in 2008. Rollin and Ryder Hesjedal (Team Garmin-Barracuda) both won stages at the tour in previous years.
The Amgen Tour of California ended today after 1180 kilometers of racing.
Boivin Takes Second Top 10 at the Tour of California
2012 Amgen Tour of California comes to an end in Los Angeles
(Los Angeles, CA – May 20, 2012) – After 1180 kilometers of racing, the 2012 Amgen Tour of California is over. Stage 8 of the tour was a short 68 kilometres of racing starting from Beverly Hills to downtown Los Angeles, at LA Live. Tens of thousands of cheering spectators were in attendance along the side of the course, and at the finish line.
Team SpiderTech had a good tour, highlighted by the intense fight for the King of the Mountain jersey. David Boily successfully defended the jersey won last year by Pat McCarty. Boily took possession of the jersey in the opening stage, and held it for two days. From then on, Boily remained in the chase for the jersey until the last climbing stage at Mount Baldy.
Brian Vandborg had a good run at the general classification. Vandborg finished in 22nd place, proving his form his coming back after joining the team midway through the season.
Coming back from a wrist injury suffered on the opening stage of the Tour of Turkey, Guillaume Boivin posted two Top 10 finishes in the Tour, finished seventh on the fourth stage and tenth in the last stage.
Peter Sagan of Team Liquigas-Cannondale won the last stage in a bunch sprint, taking his fourth victory of the tour. Guillaume Boivin sprinted to his second Top 10 of the tour, finishing in 10th position.
Robert Gesink of Rabobank won the General Classification, after a spectacular climb of the Mount Baldy, yesterday. Gesink became the second non-American rider to win the Tour.
Next up for Team SpiderTech will be the Tour of Luxembourg, preparing for the biggest test of the team’s history, the WorldTour race Tour of Switzerland.
