Tour of California Stage 6 Report, Full Results – Salas in Control of KOM

by Erinne Willock
May 18, 2012 (Big Bear Lake, CA)- Early this morning for Stage 6 from Palmdale to Big Bear Lake, 186.3km, it was still a very close competition between the two young Canadian riders competing for the KOM jersey as it has been all week. However, today saw Sébastian Salas (Team Optum presented by Kelly Benefit Strategies) increase his lead over David Boily (SpiderTech Powered By C10) from 8 to 17 points.

But has he done enough to secure the jersey? Tomorrow is the last mountainous day to win KOM points and with Mt. Baldy on course, it will be another tough day in the saddle.

“It’s good to have a lead but I’ll still have to be attentive tomorrow,” Salas told Pedal post-race. Both teams planned to be aggressive so when at kilometer two, when Sylvain Georges (Fra) AG2R La Mondiale the eventual winner of the stage attacked, both Canadians jumped at the opportunity.

Boily ended up without help from any teammates in the break while Salas was grateful to have teammate Andrew Bajadali with him in the break. “It helped a lot having Andrew with me and it was super important for the day’s result,” confided Salas.

Without a doubt today’s stage was an important day for KOM points as there were four climbs. Boily won the first KOM climb but told Pedal “… soon after I figure Salas must have found his legs cause the 2nd, 3rd and 4th KOMs were all won by him.”

Nothing comes easy and Salas had to dig deep for his points. “I felt great today, but it was a hard day,” admitted Salas. Boily, also content with his effort, agreed. “It was a very, very hard day. Sébastian was very strong and I give him a big congratulations – he deserves it.”

After the last KOM with 44km to go Salas found himself alone with Georges but decided to sit up. “Eventhough I was feeling good, I had to think about the next two days, because we’re here to win the KOM and therefore have priorities.” Salas said that Team Optum has been 100% supportive and has helped him a lot in the breaks and during the rough patches.

When asked how this result faired in comparison to previous achievements, Salas told us, “Definitely the biggest but hopefully more to come. Last year I was watching these guys on TV and now I’m riding beside them.”

Next up for both riders is two more days of racing in California. Both will continue to race hard and look for more opportunities, “Tomorrow is another day and the team will continue to race hard,” said Boily.  Both teams have strong sprinters and possibly these climbers will have to help out the sprinters come Sunday.

After California, Salas gets a short break. “First some time off and then I get ready for the Tour de Beauce, followed by the Road Nationals, and then I get married in July!”

For the young Boily, he’ll be getting ready for the next Nations Cup which is the equivalent to a U23 World Cup series. Boily is excited because the next event is in Saguenay, his hometown.
