With all six climbs counting for the King of the Mountains (KOM) classification, the opportunity was there for David Boily or Pat McCarty of Team SpiderTech powered by C10 to score some points and reclaim the polka dot jersey, which Boily held for two days. But Boily and McCarty both missed a breakaway that rode off in the opening kilometres that included current KOM leader Sebastien Salas (Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies), who took the points in the first climb before dropping back in the peloton. The breakaway went on to take almost all of the remaining KOM points on the stage.
With the hot temperatures and challenging terrain, team soigneurs Jonathan Adams and Al Worozbyt had plenty of Herbalife 24 drinks, Bonk Breaker bars and GU energy gels to service the riders at feed zones along the long course.SpiderTech time trial specialist Brian Vandborg orchestrated a significant move as the breakaway was caught shortly before the last KOM sprint, escaping with five other riders. But with Vandborg sitting just 30 seconds behind leader Peter Sagan (Liquigas-Cannondale) in the overall standings, the peloton quickly chased the move back, setting the stage up for the fourth bunch sprint finish of the 2012 Amgen Tour of California.
Slovak Peter Sagan of Liquigas-Cannondale won his fourth straight victory at the line, outsprinting Australians Heinrich Haussler of Garmin-Barracuda and Michael Matthews de Rabobank Cycling Team. Sagan remains perfect so far after four days or racing at the Tour of California.
Sagan remains the uncontested leader of the general classification midway through the race, with four stages to go including tomorrow’s time trial.David Boily is still second overall in the KOM classification, eight points behind Salas. His next chance to challenge Salas will come on Thursday’s stage from Palmdale to Big Bear Lake.
Tomorrow will be the individual time trial in Bakersfield. The solo race of 29.6km is expected to shuffle the general classification and set-up the last three days of competition.
