Tour of California Stage 3 Report, Full Results – Houle 7th, Salas Leads Boily in KOM

report by SpiderTech p/b C10

May 15, 2012 (Livermore, CA) – The streak of consecutive days for Team SpiderTech powered by C10 in the coveted King of the Mountains jersey at the Amgen Tour of California ended at eight days today as David Boily was relegated to the second position of the standings.

Boily took the mountains lead on the opening day of this year’s tour, and teammate Pat McCarty won the mountains standings in 2011 after leading the standings for the five last days.

Today, with the first climb of the stage in the opening 20 km, the break of the day once again left extremely early, and included Canadian Sebastien Salas of Optum-Kelly Benefit, who was second in the King of the Mountain standings heading into the third day of competition at the 2012 Amgen Tour of California.

“Salas left in the break so it was rather difficult for me to overcome, but I still managed to get points to prevent a large gap between him and I,” said Boily. “The goal today (Tuesday) was to recover the maximum to be in good shape for tomorrow (Wednesday) which will be the key stage for the King of the Mountain standings. We’ll see what happens, but Salas surely had to leave behind a lot of energy today, » said Boily after the race.

Salas, who finished seventh at the difficult 2011 Canadian Road Championships, is now the overall King of the Mountains leader, with 36 points.

The break of four riders included McCarty, who scored 12 points in the standings to sit fifth. McCarty came in second in the opening two KOM sprints, behind Salas. Boily added five more points in the second climb to sit in second place of the overall standings with a total of 32 points.

“Overall for the KOM, there is still a lot of positive. David is riding good, I now have points so I am a threat in case Salas is still good, and Salas wasted a lot of energy today, and tomorrow is big KOM day. Overall, this was a step in the right direction,” added McCarty after the race. “Being in the break was definitely a strategy. It definitely was not a strategy for us to have Salas in the break, but we made the best out of the situation. I sat on, and he had to ride with two other guys for most of the day, so it certainly made it hard.”

The main break broke apart after the second climb, leaving two riders riding solo until the peloton increased their rhythm to finally regain control of the race prior to the third climb.

The race ended again in a bunch sprint, despite having a category 3 climb less than 15 kilometres to the finish line. Peter Sagan of Liquigas-Cannondale took the his third straight win the stage in the final sprint, beating to the line Heinrich Haussler of Team Garmin-Barracuda and Tom Boonen of Omega Pharma-Quickstep.

Hugo Houle of Ste-Perpétue, QC finished among the leaders in the seventh place, along with three teammates of Team SpiderTech, Brian Vandborg, Raymond Kuenzli and Lucas Euser in the main group.

“I had not really considered it [a stage win] at the beginning of the tour, but I’m very happy,” said Houle. “My goal here is to help my teammates and if I managed to hang on during a stage, I attempt the sprint. That’s what I did today (Tuesday) with 500 m to go, I stuck to Sagan and managed to keep my place.”

Stage four will feature the longest leg of the 2012 race with 210 kilometres of racing between Sonora and Clovis, in the California mountains. Racers will ride four categorized climbs, and it could be a great opportunity for either Boily or McCarty to score some precious King of the Mountain points.

Every stage of the 2012 Tour of California is broadcast on television in Canada on SportsnetOne. Check your local listings for more information.
