June 6, 2007 (Montreal, QC) – Judith Arndt (T-Mobile) had the best time with 4:06:05 in the 3.5km individual time trial around lunch time today, at Stage 3 of five stages of the Tour du Grand Montreal. Following within a few tenths of a second were Dotsie Bausch (USA) Colavita/Sutter Home p/b Cooking Light and Trixi Worrack (Ger) Nürnberger Versicherung with times of 4:06:44 and 4:06:49, respectively. The top Canadian was Anne Samplonius (Team expresscopy.com) in 13th place with a time of 4:12:28.

This morning’s stage began in surprisingly cool weather, about 9 degrees C on a blustery, overcast day, and things didn’t warm up fast.
The time trial took place around Rene Levesque Park in the Montreal suburb of Lachine. The park is a long peninsula that juts out into Lac St. Louis, a widening of the St. Lawrence River, and the area is very susceptible to wind.

Arndt, who comes from near Berlin, told Pedal that she prefers cool weather, adding that also said she found the 3.5km course to be short. Arndt averaged 51.2 kmh.

Many of the women could be seen warming up on trainers for 30 minutes in the parking lot before attempting the four-minute sprint. Pedal caught up with Alex Wrubleski (Colavita/Sutter Home) doing her warm up.

Wrubleski said that she was, “feeling alright and looking forward to the stage.” After singing praises for her team, she admitted that Tuesday evening’s stage in Granby was not easy saying, “It was difficult to see in the pouring rain.” Wrubleski placed 20th in the TT — the second fastest Canadian – with a time of 4:14.

The start list was in the reverse order of the overall standing in points so Tour leader, Regina Schleicher (T-Mobile), was last to go. Schleicher ended up with a mediocre time of 4:26 and while Arndt won the stage, her team mate Oenone Wood picked up the yellow jersey and is the new race leader.

At the podium ceremony the announcer told Wood not to leave too quickly as she also picked up the green jersey for the best sprinter.

Special mention goes to 19-year-old Joelle Numainville (Team Expresscopy) who had the third best Canadian time finishing in 25th in 4:17:53. Numainville took a bad fall in Stage 1 on Monday evening and was in pain, but came back to place 12th yesterday evening on Stage 2 and had and another strong showing today.

Missing from today’s start line was Jeannie Longo (Fra) Team Uniqua, the 48-year-old “wonder woman” of cycling. Longo took a bad fall in the thunderstorm yesterday on Stage 2, and DNF’d. Apparently has already returned to France.

This evening is Stage 4, a 50km criterium through the streets of Montreal’s “Little Italy.” Tomorrow is the final stage, a 115km road race in Mont St-Hilaire through Quebec’s apple growing region.
