July 29, 2003 – The second stage of the International race was one of the less challenging courses of the seven-day race, with undulating terrain but without the severe climbs to cull those who are not pure climbers. The circuit race started and finished in the town of Johnstown taking the riders along the Little Conemaugh and Stony Creek rivers, whose flood plains Johnstown was built upon. In 1889 Johnstown made history when it became the site of the worst flood in the US. As the damn three miles up stream gave way to the pressure of the two rivers, the townspeople were given no warning but the roar of water hurtling down at them in a 60 foot wave, claiming 2,200 lives and demolishing a town in 10 minutes. Today the roar in the streets was that of the best riders in North America battling it out for the honor of winning a stage at the International. In the end it was an opportune break in the men's field staying clear bringing podium spots to riders and teams who usually do not get the chance to shine. The women's race saw the Rona team control the pace, ensuring a field sprint which Saturn's Ina Teutenberg handily won over Victory Brewing's Gina Grain.

The men's race saw early aggressive moves from teams looking for opportunities to get away from the strong Navigators, Saturn and 7-Up teams. The Navigator Team, riding in defense of Chris Baldwin's Yellow Leader's Jersey opted to try a new tactic and like a basketball team played the race out in a man on man defense with the Saturn Team. With the two strong teams watching each other, teams like Snow Valley and Webcor were able to take advantage of the situation, and created a three person break including Chris Hedges of Team Snow Valley, Marc Hagenlocher of Webcor and Oscar Pineda from the 7-UP Maxxis Team. In the three up sprint it was Hedges first for a well deserved win for the Snow Valley Team, with Hagenlocher finishing a close second. Third was Pineda from the 7UP/ Maxxis team, 35 seconds behind the race winners. The overall saw Baldwin hold his lead by only six seconds and Saturn's Nathan O'Neill slide into third behind Hedges.

In the women's race it was the Basis Team lead by defending champion, Heather Albert, forcing the pace early with attacks trying to launch riders clear of the field. The Rona team was intent on keeping the peloton whole, and race leader Genevieve Jeanson well protected. Jeanson collected the mountain points with Victory Brewing's Gina Grain collecting the sprinter's points. After 70 miles of racing the field arrived into the final run into town intact, and Saturn's Bessette moved to the front to lead-out ace sprinter Teutenberg. Bessette's efforts saw the field detonate behind her, making a clear path for Teutenberg to collect the win over Grain. Teutenberg's Saturn teammate Laura Van Gilder was third. The overall changed slightly with Jeanson still leading the race over Bessette. Teutenberg moved into third, pushing her teammate Jessica Phillips into fourth place.

Tomorrow is a tough 100 mile day again beginning in Johnstown and taking the riders over hill and dale back to Altoona. It will be a true test of race leaders Jeanson and Baldwin and their teams' determination.
