June 13, 2007 – Tour de Shore Inc. is pleased to announce the second annual Tour de Shore cycling race will take place on the southern Avalon Peninsula Sept. 1-2.
The first Tour de Shore cycling race last year received rave reviews from participants and spectators alike. The event went so well that it was voted the “2006 cycling event of the year” by Atlantic Pedaler Magazine.
Planning for this year’s event is well underway and started with a bang when it was designated as the site of the 2007 Atlantic Road Cycling Championships attracting riders from all over the Atlantic region and beyond.
Shannon Sullivan has been hired to plan and execute the second Tour de Shore under the direction of the newly formed Board of Directors. Mr. Sullivan brings a strong background in event planning and a super energetic attitude to the event. He has worked closely with the CBDC Celtic, Bicycle Newfoundland and Labrador (BNL) and other key industry partners in the development of this year’s event. All are expecting this race to be better than ever.
With regional, provincial and national competitors greasing their wheels in anticipation for this annual race, it is sure to be a crowd-pleaser for spectators of all ages, with the weekend’s activities featuring something for everyone. We have events for professional racers, recreational riders, families and tourists from inside and outside the province.
As a kick of to the weekend an opening BBQ will be held in Riverhead on Friday night August 31. Races will begin on Sept. 1 in St. Mary’s , Portugal Cove South & Cappahayden with the final destination in Ferryland. Festivities will take place in Ferryland at the Southern Shore Folk Arts Council Building and field following the end of the races. This includes workshops, kids games, information booths, live entertainment and presentation of awards. On Sept. 2, races will begin in Cape Broyle, Tors Cove and Bay Bulls, ending in Goulds with awards and entertainment at the Bidgoods Plaza.
To conclude the races on Sept. 2, there will be a time trial that will take place in the afternoon on Route 3/Goulds By-Pass in Goulds.
Last years over all champion, Zack Garland, said “…there’s no where else I’d rather be than bike racing on the beautiful southern shore…”
