October 16, 2007 – On a damp foggy Southern Shore Saturday, cyclists, from as far away as Germany, geared up to tackle the challenging terrain that is Route 10, Southern Shore Highway. This year’s event saw 100 riders peddle the 198 km course. Starting in St. Mary’s Bay on Saturday morning and finishing on The Robert E. Howlett Memorial-Goulds by-pass road on Sunday after noon. Riders battled wind, rain, and fog over the two-day event.
2006 Stage winner and the overall champion Zack Garland from the Battery in St. John’s and raced for Masi-Adobe in BC this year, was once again the big winner. This year Zack faced a bigger challenge from fellow NL Chris McNeil (currently living and riding for H&R Block in Alberta) but held him off until the stage 3 time trials on Goulds by-pass road. Chris beat Zack by 7 sec to win this stage. In the overall standing Zack was able to hold onto his title beating Chris by 10 points. Nova Scotia native Terry Tomlin took third.
In the senior women division St. John’s resident Kathryn Whelan defended her title by winning all 3 stages. Amy Pryse-Phillips and Abigail Steel, also of St. John’s , rounded out the top three.
The junior categories had some very strong riders with some possible foreshadowing of future events being something to look forward to. Kim Manual of St. John’s , in the junior woman, and Sheldon Crosbie of Corner Brook, in junior men, both took the junior championship by winning all three stages. These two will be something to watch in the future.
A big thank you from Tour de Shore to all the volunteers who help us once again to make it the success that it was. We are hard at working getting ready for the 2008 event and hope to see you all again next year.
